Gap Old Navy Makes Mom Jeans

Nearly every denim makeover I’ve done ends with the same conversation.

“I had no idea what a difference it would make – I thought I was safe with Gap jeans!”

Or,

“Oh my goodness why didn’t anyone tell me I was wearing Mom Jeans?? I thought that as long as I was shopping at Old Navy, I was fine!!”

Gap and Old Navy denim.  A subject that I’ve long struggled over whether to address publicly or not.  I’ve revealed the truth about them one-on-one for quite a while, but have feared the backlash of addressing it here.

I know it’s hard to swallow, because we’ve all worn them at one time or another.

But I must say it, because I am committed to being honest with you in all matters of denim.

So read it fast – like ripping off a band-aid.

Ready?

Gap and Old Navy sell Gateway Mom Jeans.

There.  It’s out there now, so let’s look at why.

I embarked on a reconnaissance mission to both stores accompanied by my dedicated husband/photographer, where I tried on every style of denim available.  I’ve gone through and analyzed the evidence collected, then matched them up with comparables in other brands.

But first, a few disclaimers:

1. Jeans can fit vastly differently depending on the body.  What may look awful on me could look good on you.  My points below are not blanket statements, just strong suggestions.

2.  We tried to match camera angles as well as possible, but seeing as how we were on an intensely covert operation and there was an especially nosy associate working the dressing room during our mission, not everything could be perfected as we wished.

3. Some people buy Gap and Old Navy because they are inexpensive.  Almost all of the jeans pictured can be attained for about the same price as a pair of Gap jeans. (My current favorite way to get designer jeans at half off or more is through Nordstrom Rack or their app, HauteLook.) Good fit does not have to be expensive.

Let’s start with Gap.

1. The first style I tried on was called Real Straight.

Gap Real Straight

These jeans, on the surface, do not qualify for the number one definition of Mom Jeans: pockets ending before the lower curvature of the butt.

However, they do have some concerning areas that clearly qualify them as Gateway Mom Jeans.  Specifically, they make an unattractive inverted heart betwixt the cheeks, and the pockets are SO DANG GIGANTIC that they could hold a small Llama.

Gap Real Straight Problem Areas

Perhaps on their own, it’s not clear enough.  For comparison, here they are as compared to an Antik straight leg:

Gap Straight Vs Antik Straight

Yes, that is the same butt.  No, I didn’t starve myself between the two photos.

2. Next I tried on Gap’s Always Skinny.

Gap Always Skinny

Again, these aren’t terrible.  But they’re not great.  They give me an extremely wideset rear view, and repeat the Kangaroo Pouch Pockets.

Notice the width shrinkage when compared to a well-shaped pair of skinny jeans bought from a neighboring mall store:

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny

You can see how the smaller pocket, in this case, gives the curve and lift to offer pep and life, rather than a flat, weighed down look.  Also, specifically on a skinny jean, the smaller pocket helps lessen the inverted triangle issue by separating the butt from the thigh.

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny Side

(You might remember that we discussed the flattering qualities of large pockets in a prior post.  While this is true, when the pockets are disproportionately dinasauric, the effect is not nearly so ideal.)

3. The next pair I tried on was the Gap Original Fit.

Gap Original Fit

Clearly, these are horrifying.  Especially note how the pockets are so wide-set that it gives me a third butt cheek, and the tapered yet loose leg is classic Mom Jean.

Gap Original Fit Problem Areas

Also?  No one should EVER need a zipper THAT LONG.

Gap Original Fit Zipper Length t

If you desire something classic yet modern and flattering forgoodnesssake, by all means go with a nice, conservative 7 For All Mankind.

4.  Let’s move on.  Quickly.  To Gap Perfect Boot.

Gap Perfect Boot

I found these to be the least offensive.  However, the pockets were still too wide-set and oversized, once again offering the appearance of a supersized caboose.  Notice the immediate shrinking sensation when compared to a pair of Hudson Bootcut:

Gap Boot Vs Hudson Boot

5. Next: the Gap Curvy Fit.

Gap Curvy Fit

Oddly enough, the Curvy Fit seemed to take away all of my curves and conglomerate them into a giant pile of lumpishness.

If you have curves and need room for them to move and breathe, Miss Chic or LA Idol are awesome options with quite a bit more visual interest and flattering fit:

6. My next fitting was in Gap Long and Lean.

Gap Long and Lean

This pair was the only pair that qualified beyond Gateway and straight into Mom Jeans – at least on me, as the pockets ended significantly before the lower curvature of my butt:

Gap Long and Lean Problem Areas

However, one of my best friends wears Gap Long and Lean, and I’ve always been puzzled as to how they look so great on her – especially since we even wear the same size.  So, in fairness, I present to you evidence that Gap jeans can look right on the exact right body:

Gap Long and Lean Right and Wrong Body

Let me assure you, though – I have counseled many former Gap wearers, and the friend pictured above is the exception, not the rule.

So if you don’t have that rare Gap-flattered body and you want to look Long and Lean, might I suggest Rock and Republic – notice the immediate leg-lengthening effect:

Gap Long and Lean Vs Rock and Republic

7. The last Gap style that I found was highly ironically named…the Sexy Boyfriend.

Gap Sexy Boyfriend

OH NO THEY DIDN’T.

I SO wish I could have found these in my size to try on.

Pleats.

Darts.

Flap Inner-Only Pockets.

TAPERED. LEG.

Have you ever seen any man under 70 wearing jeans like this, let alone a sexy boyfriend??

I shudder to think.

But I did find one last treasure before I left Gap…

8. The Gap Denim Romper.

Gap Denim Jumper

Yes.  I was ashamed.

Gap Denim Jumper t

(And my cameraman didn’t like my visible bra strap.)

Just in case you missed it, the back waist actually qualifies this outfit as… Grandma Jeans.

Gap Denim Jumper Elastic Waist

I apologize to your retinas.

I rushed out of Gap and headed to Old Navy.

Which was somewhat akin to jumping out of the frying pan and into the nuclear incinerator.

I tried on every style that they had in both bootcut and skinny, but neither leg choice was better than the other.  So, to summarize, here are all three of their major styles in bootcut.

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison

The Diva was the least offensive, but still lacked style or a flattering cut.

The Dreamer copied Gap’s main problem of wide-set pockets and triple butt.

And the Sweetheart was unapologetically a hardcore Mom Jean.

Just in case you needed a healthy comparison, I offer them against 7 For All Mankind:

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison with 7 For All Mankind Stacked

Lest you think that I have somehow doctored my photos (which I have not) or that this information is only applicable to my body type, here are a few examples of others who have been freed from the noose of Gateway Mom Jeans:

Subject A, a close friend who had no idea how flattering and comfortable great jeans could be:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol 2

Subject B, a blog reader and mom of four kids:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol

And Subject C, a new Mom and blog reader from the other side of the country who got a long-distance makeover via the following before-and-after butt-texts:

Makeover Gap to Express Rerock

(Yes, I get butt-texts quite often, usually accompanied with the question, “Are these Mom Jeans?” If you need to butt-text me, just let me know and I’ll give you my number.)

After Subject C bought her jeans, she sent me a couple more full-length before and after photos (with an adorable baby leg included as a bonus):

But.

Even if you look great in Gap jeans – even if they fit you perfectly, the pockets are proportionately correct, and the style was made for your body type, here is my biggest argument against Gap and Old Navy Jeans:

They stretch out.

Ferociously.

Unforgivingly.

Ridiculously.

Gap and Old Navy Stretch Out

So even if they don’t look like Mom Jeans when you put them on, they will before the next episode of Dora the Explorer is over.

  1. THANK you for this post! My own mother was telling me my Old Navy jeans were making me look bigger, that my jeans were saggy, that I even looked like my stomach had a weird protrusion – something to do with their zippers. (I was strictly and ON Sweetheart and Kohl’s “mom jean” brand wearer). I now wear I.N.C. and Style & Co. from Macy’s and they are markedly different. You’re like my sister – I butt text her or make her go in the fitting rooms with me. I love Stein Mart where you can get 7FAM, and now that Kohl’s sells Rock & Republic, I’m excited to “get my butt back.” : )

  2. I have found that ON Rockstar jeans are the only ones that work for me. I have very, very skinny leg and round hips. The super skinny cut on the rockstar are a little roomy on my thin legs but it is better than any other pants out there.

  3. Someone else mentioned a “bling bias,” and I kind of have to agree. More than one pair of the jeans you posted as “good” had the same issues as some of the mom jeans, but the bad things were obscured by giant white threads, swirls, swooshes, or giant buttoned butt flaps. Also, distressed washes are made to make your body look “right” by camouflaging where things get unflattering, so Gap’s more “mature” washes aren’t as forgiving. Of course, a lot of women past a certain age will feel silly in distressed wash jeans with butt detailing. (Which might be what dooms us to mom jeans.)

Mostly, though, I just think this comes down to what looks right on your body. I’ve tried 7 FAM and Rock and Republic, and not only do these not fit at all–they gap out several inches at the waist–they don’t look anything like this on me. Think muffin top, butt cleavage and saddle bags. Oh my! Gap curvy look great, though. Gap long and lean…ridiculous. Probably because I’m not long and lean. *shrug* I think the important thing is to know what good fit looks like and only buy things that fit. The brand matters less than how it actually works out.

  4. I’m wondering what you would recommend for someone with larger than average thighs and I find that many pants not just jeans are tight in the front and gap in the back? I don’t go around sticking my stomach out so what’s the deal? I’ve made decent progress on the baby weight and baby, uh, stomach fluff, but I’m still a size bigger than pre baby. What brand(s) do you think would work for me?
I didn’t think about pocket size, and was disappointed to realize how big and wide spaced the pockets are on my ON jeans! Plus the leg seams seem off, like too far forward, making the back of the pants look disproportionately large compared to the front. :( I bought them because I had an old pair that fit great. I tried them on in the store, and didn’t realize that they changed them!

    1. Look for a jean that has a mid rise, with a stretchy (but not elastic) waistband. 7 For All Mankind is like this, as is Citizens of Humanity.

  5. So what jeans are people supposed to buy when they can’t afford the $118 jeans from Express?

I mean. I’d love to buy me some real decent jeans, but with two kids in full-time daycare, fashion and looking good is what gets cut back on first from a very real financial point…..

    1. I never buy Express at full price – I wait until they have a good sale AND I use the coupons via their mailing list. You can usually get them for half off or even less.

  6. I have to say, as a curvy girl, gap hasn’t fit right since they redid the styles. I recommend silver Jeans or hydraulic. They fit so much better!

  7. I must say, you my dear are an absolute genius. I’ve been wearing jeans since I could walk and NEVER realized the difference the pockets made. I’ve read three of yoru blogs now and am so enlightened.

HOWEVER, I am currently 2 weeks away from giving birth to my 2nd child. Two years ago I gave birth to my first child. And I could not find jeans that did not give me a muffin top except for mom jeans. I needed a high waist that would contain the flabby skin in those months it took before it sprung back.

This baby is coming about the first of September. I will need jeans to wear in the fall. Can you please PLEASE do a post about mom jeans for people that have flabby mom BELLIES. I will even model for you.

    1. Look for a mid-rise, stretchy waistband, and preferably a wide (double-buttoned) waistband. I’ll be glad to help you out when you’re ready to look for jeans!

  8. Finally someone said it! I’ve noticed ALL of the above! Especially the crazy stretching process- can’t wait to go and try the options you suggested! Yeehaw!

  9. Ok so I saw this on my friend’s Facebook and immediately commented about how i love my mom jeans because they fit and they come in something other than “let your muffin top hang out” cut.

I spent the whole post thinking yeah but they are cheap; I’m a size 16 waist and 18 thighs; This totally doesn’t apply to me on the verge of Plus Size. Then you mentioned the part about how they stretch – I seriously thought that was how all jeans were. I HATE that. I have jeans that I love but they stretch out so bad I am still stuck wearing belts (which I hate) otherwise my pants fall down (though I do love being able to go to the bathroom without unbuttoning).

Now I just hope I can find some of these other brands that I have never heard of once it actually gets cool enough to wear jeans again.

  10. I worked at Old Navy in high school and I HATED their jeans. . Even with my cute little 17 year old body they still managed to make me look atrocious. When you work in a clothing store they like for you to actually wear their clothes, so I had no choice. I found exactly ONE pair that were acceptable and I wore them every day I worked. lol

  11. Just discovered this website via Pintrest. You had me cracking up! I am a (pretty) new mama, and have just been wearing any clothes that I have laying around that still fit! I don’t really worry about it, until my fabulous baby-free friends come to visit. Then I start worrying about all these frumpy jeans I’m wearing; am I wearing mom jeans already?!? I have to admit, the only pair I’ve bought post-baby was from Old Navy! Ha! I don’t love them, but they seemed less mom-like than the other frumpy ones I had laying around.
I am going to have to spend some time going through your site and taking butt shots of myself! Ha! Thanks for all the tips :)

  12. So you may have already answered this, but I can’t read through that many comments! Where do you get L.A. Idol and 7 For all Mankind jeans?

  13. Ok, LOVED this post! :) Thank you :) As a previous poster said, I am currently rocking maternity jeans (ok, when it’s not like 95+*…. Florida), but I hate to say I usually stick to Gap. However, I ventured out and got ann taylor loft jeans last year and I was super disappointed in them too. They stretch out in 30 min as well! Bah. Clearly I will need to come back here post baby (#3) and find some super flattering jeans so I don’t look too mom-ish, I mean I’m only 29!

  14. I just wanted to add my own experiences to this, I worked at Old Navy for 2 years, from 2008 to 2010. I definitely did see some major changes in the denim, and they were not good ones. The main problem with Old Navy/Gap is the inconsistency in their sizes. You can hold up three size 8 pairs of jeans in the exact same style and they will differ in size by inches. When I worked in the fitting room I used to tell customers to grab at least three pairs of the same size jeans in the style they liked and find the one that fit them best. Definitely makes it difficult to find a pair of jeans that fit as they should. I haven’t bought jeans from there in a few years because it’s not worth my time to try on every single size 8 in the store to find one that’s right.

  15. Any advice for a plus sized mom to avoid mom jeans? I know express doesn’t make jeans in my size (16-18 depending on brand)?

    1. I’m hoping to do some serious research and write a sequel post soon – it’s a much harder thing to find, but I’m convinced they’re out there!

  16. You need to check out jeans from The Buckle! We are specializing in Denim with all of our employees being denim specialists. We have over 50 different fits, with over 300 different styles! We have the jeans to fit every type of body!

  17. I know this post is a month old now, so maybe you won’t see and be able to respond to this, and potentially it is addressed elsewhere, but here is my issue. I shop at Gap and Old Navy because their inseam is longer by default. I wear a size 16ish and shrinking, and I can rarely find 16 longs at other stores. Since Gap and Old Navy are longer in the regular length, and since they carry size 16 in stores, I feel I do well there. But you are right that they shrink something terrible and I do get the saggy butt after about 1 hour of wearing them. And on top of that, the thighs wear a hole in them very very quickly, which makes them really feel cheap. Are there other stores with longer inseams on the regular length jeans? I don’t like the idea of ordering jeans online, because I need to try them on and make sure they fit first. But I am at a loss as to where to start, and having been a thin size 8 most of my life up until hormones and pregnancy, etc, I beat myself up when I go clothing shopping right now. So I don’t want to go to every store on the planet only to come out at the end of the day with no jeans and a very bruised self image. Any help for a nutcase like me? (BTW…I’m a 33 year old mom and I don’t like bedazzled jeans)

    1. I would try Buckle first – they tend to have the most variety / sizes / lengths. Also, I’d be glad to hook you up with a Vault rep near you – we typically have some longs in those sizes.

  18. Wow! Thank you for posting this and all the work creating the comparison shots and everything! Now I feel like I can go jeans shopping again and actually find something that will fit better!

  19. you are ridiculously funny and so kind for putting this out there for all of us. i had NO IDEA and I’m a dancer from LA. How could I have been putting my butt through gateway hell for so long?! I’m getting onto 7FAM and LA Idol stat!

  20. love this!!! I use to work for Old Navy. They have the worst jeans ever!! they stretch like crazy after about 5 minutes of wear. My manager at Old Navy tried to force me to buy their jeans I told her I would NOT waste my hard earned money on their jeans if she wanted to buy me a pair go right ahead but I would NOT wear them!!! THEY ARE THE WORST JEANS!!!!!!

  21. I haven’t read through all the replies but I was wondering if you have suggestions for x-long inseam jeans? I’m 6′ and wear a 35-36″ inseam. It’s nearly impossible to find jeans long enough, let alone jeans that look nice and fit my body. I currently wear a 16-18 X-long from Gap. I really don’t care for the fit of their jeans either but have had few other options. I’m used to spending a fortune on pants but only once a year will I buy a new pair because we just can’t afford it. Needless to say, I wear a lot of unflattering clothing :( Any help would be much appreciated!

    1. I usually recommend Brown Label or Rock and Republic, but I’m not sure about the sizing. R & R is at Kohl’s now, so I think maybe they go up higher in the sizes? Both of those brands have 36″ inseams.

  22. Do you have any experience or comments about New York and Company jeans? I love their dress pants and have a couple pairs of jeans that are extremely comfortable but I’m not sure about how they look compared to other brands.

    1. Jeans-wise they’ve really gone down the Gateway Mom Jeans path as well. They might look right on some people, but on the whole I do not recommend them. They also stretch out pretty fiercely.

    1. ReRock: At Express
LA Idol and Miss Chic: at Boutiques or through Vault Denim
The rest of the brands: at Department stores or through Vault Denim

      Hope that helps!

  23. Ladies, anyone with denim fitting problems needs to head to the nearest Buckle Store or shop Buckle.com. We are denim fitting specialists and have over 450 stores across the US. Our prices range from $39.95-$190.00. We have jeans for every BODY and budget.

  24. Okay. I have some good news for you. After years of jeans getting stretched out in the butt and knees, I finally learned that the secret to jeans that don’t stretch out is polyester. I now only buy jeans that have a little bit of polyester (10% is fine). I swear this has made all the difference in the world. ALL the difference.

  25. I LOVED Gap when I was a 15 year old size 1. Since then I have not found any I like. I think they are made for the wee ones because they make you look more curvy.

  26. So True! the pockets are hideously large on Gap and ON and the “low rise” inseam is still so long on all styles. The problem with the pockets is that they don’t adjust the placement depending on size. Also, I haven’t seen anyone mention the fact that the sizes are huge. I wear a 4 or 6 (depending on style) in American Eagle jeans but I can fit a 2 in old navy. I used to work for AE so I’ve heard all the complaints/praises. Usually, you will have to go up a size or 2 there but who cares what size you have on as long as they look good! Also, if you don’t like your jeans to stretch out buy denim fabric with more “stretch.” the same style of jean can fit differently in a different wash because the fabrics are different.

  27. Sorry if you’ve already answered this questions somewhere in the 400+ comments, but what do you suggest for someone with a FLAT butt. (You’d think, “Squats” right? yeah, me too, but I can squat a good bit of weight and still, no butt…it’s like a credit card swiping machine back there) I usually go with American Eagle, but that’s mostly because they don’t stretch out as much as every other pair I’ve ever owned…I really miss non-stretch jeans…But anyway, any suggestions for a pancake ass?

  28. Now you need to got to Banana Republic and JCrew and do an expose on their pants – what the heck is going on there? Unless you are built like a 17 year old boy these pants are so unflattering it’s ridiculous!!

  29. Ok, number 1: this is so HILARIOUS! And number 2: this is so TRUE! I wish I could afford all new jeans now that my body has totally changed since having my baby but I’m glad you’ve proved that moms can look good in jeans!

  30. Great post. I personally stalk Hint jeans (sz 5) because they work for my body and are super affordable. And never stretch out after the dryer- major peeve.

I bought Gap capri jeans this summer in sz 4. I’m 125 lbs and 5’5 with 36″ hips. I’m NOT a size 2 (except occasionally in frigging thrifted aeropostale which can’t make its mind up about what a size actually is, or what numbers are). These Gap capris are literally falling off of me without a belt. And even with a belt, have enough room for a second butt.

I think I will try a 7famk. But am concerned, because in so many brands, 4 won’t even zipper without that pliers trick in Dazed and Confused, but 6 is baggy and falling off. :help:

  31. this is SO TRUE! I used to work at Old Navy, and even with a big employee discount, I would never wear their jeans! Then I worked at Express, and I’ve loved every jean I’ve ever gotten from there. But the best of all time…? PAIGE denim! Try them!

  32. I LOVE THIS POST!

I saw this on Pinterest, and it makes SO much sense! I have a few pairs of ON jeans that I wear since I’m getting back in shape and kind of between sizes. EVERY time I wear them, I get asked if I’ve gained weight back. I just put on a pair, looked in the mirror, and I have the dreaded third butt!

Since I’m short and curvy (5’2″ and a Sz 10), I SWEAR by American Eagle jeans. I only have one pair left (Favorite Boyfriend cut) and I have almost worn them completely out.

Finally, I read this whole post and all the comments, then noticed your picture was from Railroad Park – I live here in B’ham too! I’d suggest to folks who want to try on a LOT of different brands/cuts of jeans all in one store to go over to Plato’s Closet. You can actually get some really designer brands (7FAM, for example) for a really good buy.

  33. What I hate about Old Navy denim is that every pair (in the same size) fits differently. If I ever try them on, I’ll take every size 8 into the dressing room with me to find the one that fits best. Also I’ve had the problem that after washing they shrink in the crotch! Not comfortable. Love this post and all the pictures. For so long I’ve been cheap with my jeans, but last year when I got my first pair of Hudson’s my outlook changed. They are so much more flattering and hold up better.

  34. Can I butt-text you? Pretty please? I have lost 30 lbs over the last nine months and have gone from size 16 to a size 10. I also spent Friday weeding through my closet. Four giant-sized-trash bags full of clothes later (that I donated to Goodwill) I am down to two pairs of pants and a couple of skirts. It’s both terrifying and freeing.

BTW, I am 40 and the mother of two, so maybe I need to embrace the mombutt?

  35. This is so interesting – I’m 42, and I have a hard time finding styles that are in between junior and old lady. Seems like there is a large gap here. Love that you posted comparison pics!

  36. Now I have to go home and try all my jeans on to see how my pockets are! :) LOL

As a “plus size” person with a gut but no butt I have a very hard time with jeans. I wear a 16 or 18 so finding jeans that I can even wear at all are impossible let alone with proper pocket placement. Wondering if you have any recommendations?

  37. I found your post via the “How to go viral on pinterest” post on Unskinny Boppy, and I think you’re capable of solving my jeans problem! I can never never find any that fit right. So I’m off to read more of your blog instead of off to Old Navy to take advantage of their jean sale. Honestly, that’s where I was headed today, but you changed my mind! Thank you!

  38. I only own one pair of Gap jeans because generally I’m too small to fit into even a zero there, but even given my tiny size, they make me look like I have a flat, saggy butt! And they stretch out so much that I can only wear them one day before having to wash and dry them to make them fit again. I usually wear jeans for 2 or 3 days before washing, so this is pretty frustrating. I also had a friend in high school who always wore Gap jeans, and they just looked awful on her. I always wondered if that was just her, or if everyone looked that bad in them. Evidently it’s not just her.

  39. Loved the info here. I worry about how my butt looks, but it is my tummy I am most concerned over. These days you find only the low-rise every where you look. I feel that midrise works best for my stretched out tummy after having 4 children and being slightly over weight. Do you have any suggestions for that problem area that could help a girl out???

  40. I’ve long thought that Old Navy jeans make my booty look flat but strangely enough I love their maternity jeans! They give your tush a nice shape and don’t seem to walk up size throughout the day.

  41. Ah! I hate hate hate shopping for jeans, and have recently bought some from ON. I have noticed that they sag quite a bit, especially around the fly, but I can’t seem to find any that fit my rather ample backside and my college-student budget. Express jeans are a combination of huge in the waist and tiny everywhere else on my body. Any suggestions for a girl with a pear shape who doesn’t have the budget to buy the expensive brands?

    1. Hmm… have you tried American Eagle? I think they tend to stretch out as well, though. You can always shop sales and clearance – I never pay full price for jeans.

  42. I have to wear Sweetheart Jeans from Old Navy. I am an 18/20 and itss the only Jean that fits me. They do stretch a ton. I give you that. But once companies realize there is money in the plus size world, I am stuck! Plus I am petite!

    1. I agree – I have no idea why companies are capitalizing on the plus-size segment! There desperately need to be more great jeans out there. I’m planning on doing some research soon, though, and writing a follow-up post. Keep an eye out for it!

  43. This article seriously is ridiculous. I work at gap, and none of the jeans fit like they show in your pictures. I’m not sure if its the awful angle of your camera shot, or the fact that you can’t find a size that actually fits to make you look good. Actually it is probably both.

  44. And here I just thought that my old stand-by Gap jeans just didn’t fit my “new” mom body! Thank you for posting this. I can’t wait to go shopping for a more flattering pair of nice jeans.

  45. Cleary all of the people who are criticizing this blog are the ones who wear Gap and Old Navy jeans and just don’t know any better. They only get so sensitive and defensive about it because not only are they being told their jeans aren’t flattering, but they also are shown photographic evidence. Pictures don’t lie.

  46. I won’t lie, I’m cheap as hell, and I do wear Old Navy jeans fairly regularly – but I won’t argue that you’re wrong. You’re right. The fit, unfortunately, and the pockets tend to be not so hot. Comfy? Hell yes! But not sexy. Their sundresses are about 1 good to 20 hideous as well for similar reasons, but that’s a whole other rant. I would definitely love to see you do another round with a focus on plus size since that’s where I fall :)

  47. Loved your article! I have trouble finding jeans that fit & would love to try the Express & LA Idol. I’m assuming I get the Express jeans at Express? What about LA Idol? Any suggestions of stores that carry these brands? Thanks!

  48. I followed a link to your blog from Pinterest and I’m so glad I kept reading! Based on the pictures and recommendations from your comments, I just ordered a pair of Rerock jeans from express.com. Sight unseen, so we’ll see how they fit, but I’m really excited. For the next 11 minutes, they are offering 30% off everything and then I had another 15% off code, making my jeans $70 after shipping. Cross your fingers for me!

  49. OK my Daughter in law posted this on Fb and I stumbled on here. I have to tell you..I have NEVER bought designer jeans. We had 5 kids in 6.5 years and I was lucky to get into jeans..sweats were usually my attire of choice. When I was able to start getting out of the house and into the world I bought cheap jeans..remember the 5 kids. I have carried on that tradition for over 20 years now.
I have recently lost over 50lbs and this blog will make me think about quality instead of quantity. Just because I am a mom to 5 (and grandma to 2) doesn’t me I need to settle. I can’t believe I am saying this but I will be looking for designer jeans to see what actually fits my butt..not just my wallet! Thank you!

  50. I was wondering where you could typically find the LA idol jeans. My google search is not coming up with much besides ebay and zappos.

  51. I’m a huge thrift/consignment store shopper for jeans and I see the old style Gap jeans quite frequently and in great condition! All the jeans are preshrunk for length AND I find brands that I wouldn’t normally try on. Best score: Joe’s Jeans Honey brand new with tags for $24.99!

  52. Thanks for this post! You have convinced me. My question is, how do I find out if there’s a Vault consultant in my area? I live in Las Vegas.

    1. Thanks! If you’d like to participate, I’d love to have you! I’m hoping to do a research trip in the next few weeks. Which works better for you – days, nights or weekends?

      1. Probably days, I usually work nights. But if you can let me know when, I can probably make sure I’m off. I am usually off on Tuesdays!

  53. Never been much of a Gap or ON fan… but they are not the only ones struggling with such a battle of jeans. I’ll stick with my original Wranglers and the occasional Qbaby… the rest of the Wrangler styles are having the same problems you spoke of.

  54. Wow,  I was amazed at the difference a pair of jeans make. I do have a question, does no mom jeans mean you have to wear th ehorrible, indecent butt crack showing jeans?  I hate those as much as mom jeans.

    1. Definitely not! I am a high believer in mid-rise, which should hit right below your belly button. Also, if the waist comes down when you sit down, then they don’t fit right.

  55. Question, I have been an avid gap jean wearer because I can order the extra LONG with a 36″ inseam. Where do I even start looking for new bends this long? I’m a size 14-16 depending on the brand nd I’m 6’2. I’m curvy, not fat, but six feet tall. I wAnt to be able to put my jeAns in the dryer and wear heels with them :)

    1. Rock And Republic and Brown Label are definitely 36″, standard. 7 For All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity MAY be that long, as well. That’s the nice thing about designer jeans, at least for you – they all come in super long!

  56. First of all, you are HILLARIOUS to read! I love it! :) Second, jeans have always been so impossible to find for me. Pre baby, I loved Silver jeans (that was also when I could charge everything and worry about it later.. ahha.. single and stupid). I had a non exhistant but and was skinny. :) now, I have a wide flat…in a non flattering way butt. I’m struggling with body image right now if you can’t tell. I just had baby #2, 8 weeks ago and NOTHING fits!! “sobb” I always struggle in the dressing room, but now it’s even worse. Any brand suggestions? I was size 5/6 before baby #2 and now post baby I’m.. hopeless. :) I have tried on 7for all mankind jeans before and they fit like junior jeans and I feel uncomfortable in the stores I find them because the girls always give me this look like, mom’s shouldn’t shop here and there is no way you can fit in those. who do you think you are kidding? (so after trying on about 2 pairs, I shoot out of there before I really give them a chance i’m sure) shopping has been horrifying. in LONG, i’d love to have your number to butt text you sometime.

    1. Feel free to email me here! I totally understand the post-partum body blues – I’ve been there for sure!! Try Express, Stella cut – they can do wonders for a butt!

  57. I think this is a good website but i think its dated…… they’re are many styles missing from this that I have seen in other retailers that are not on here. ….working in retail for 10 years i know my jeans! My advice and it sucks but no matter what style you think you are you must try on every style that the store has to offer. Because you never know…yeah maybe you want a “curvy” fit but the regular fit looks better on you . Also in the example above with the old navy jeans and about how they stretch….ALL jeans stretch! ALL! especially if they already have a bot of stretch to them! So you want the jeans to fit snug. not tight! but snug. that way they will stretch a bit but not to much so that they get baggy. Also as a rule I never ever ever dry my jeans! line dry them! they will last longer and hold up better! and don’t think that you can’t wear certain jeans! try them all on! you never know what you’ll love. leave the kids, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend at home and find what you love! and don’t let this website influence you too much because sometime even the most expensive jeans fit like crap! look i have worked at Express which have amazing expensive jeans and worked at old navy which are cheap real good as well. I have found pairs of jeans that I love at both stores and will swear by them. Once pair in particular not on here from Old Navy are the flirt denim they are great and I love them. also very many styles of denim are not on here from express..just the rerocks…they have like 4 other styles….the stella in my opinion are the best! and very similar and less expensive then the the rerock which yes are amazing but they will run you upwards to $118 and up. ok thats it. I just wanted to pipe in here since i thought some info was missing and I thought it would help. I have helped hundreds of women find there jeans and find the right ones that they love! good luck everyone!

  58. i have NEVER looked decent in old navy or gap jeans! all this time i thought i was just misshapen….so glad to know it’s the jeans and not me. phew! ;)

  59. This post made me really excited at first. Someone who can tell me other jeans out there that fit better than gap/old navy. However, by the end of the post I was pretty “bummed out”. The jean brands mentioned are waaaay more expensive (like 3x the price!) than gap and old navy jeans. The only way they would be affordable is through Vault online store or a party. I can’t just sit and wait around for people to have a Vault party (especially because I don’t know anyone involved). The online store is hard because you haven’t actually tried on the jeans for sale, so it doesn’t seem smart to buy. I also echo the same problem that other women mentioned; a big butt and small waist. Lots of stores don’t have good fitting jeans for that figure. And most designer brands are difficult to even find a size to fit that figure. Otherwise is a plus size jean to fit the rear and a lot of tailoring everywhere else.
The information is great, and I am on board for reevaluating jean choices. But do you have suggestions for jean brands that are similarly priced (give or take) and can be purchased in a store, right now, as I finish this post? That would be the most helpful information to save the world from the dreaded “mom” jean. Thanks to this post, I am ready to throw out my gap jeans!……. once I can find an alternative that fits better for a reasonable amount of money.
Thanks for the help and advice.

    1. I watch for jeans on clearance – I can usually get a really good deal – even on designer jeans (I’ve paid $22 for a $250 pair of jeans!! And $70 for a $250 pair several times). Express is fairly similar in price to Gap – especially when you combine their sales and coupons. Also, you can always try consignment stores.

      Hope this helped!

  60. Wow loved this! Great tips. I have 1 pair of Old Navy jeans that ALWAYS get stretched out when I wear them. It drives me crazy when they start sagging and make a popping noise as I walk because of all the slack …between the legs! These have become the back up pair for when my other 10 pairs are dirty or misplaced. I have several pairs of jeans from Delia’s and American Eagle that fit great. I have been trying to get my mom out of her Mom Jeans for a while now. I will definitely mention the pocket size effect to her! Thanks!

  61. This post is awesome. LOVE. Thanks for saving the women of America from mom jeans. Now if i could find jeans that fit a super-long torso (read: high-rise on everybody else = low-rise on me) and no hips…

  62. Jeans are the bane of my existence! I’m 5’7″ and 140 with “athletic” thighs and no waist/hips. I LOVED Gap forever ago (per 1992) and wore nothing but. Then I went to college and got poor. After college, I needed “work” jeans. I’m a teacher so I can wear jeans. Anyway, I went for guy jeans. I wear a 30×32 in GAP men’s, super low boot fit. THEN Gap quit making them. WTH? I need new jeans. I can’t afford more than $30/pair. HELP!

  63. You are helping a LOT of women out there – nice work!

ONE objection – while you are blessedly ridding the world of Mom Jeans, some of the suggested jeans above dangerously toe the line of COUGAR JEANS! White stitching, flap pockets, and crystals of any sort went out of style in 2008, unless you are a cast member of Jersey Shore. They are the female douche bag jean and if you think that they are still in style, you automatically date yourself – thus, cougar jeans. Ladies, find a good cut in a classic wash/style! Those LA Idol ones are the WORST! The lady that comes to mind when I see those is alone at the bar doing China White or Fuzzy Navel shots – you do not want be this woman.

    1. Regarding the Cougaresqueness of pocket design, I wonder if that has to do with different regions of the country. Several people have said that, but then many others have confirmed that they are very trendy in their area.

  64. Has anyone else had any problems with jeans smelling like formaldehyde? I first noticed it about 9 months ago. I was pregnant at the time and had bought some maternity jeans at Target. After wearing them I was overwhelmed by a strong smell. I thought it was my sensitive pregnancy nose but have since bought two other pairs (one fron Khols, one from ON) that smelled this way. No amount of washing will remove the smell. I am not sure what to do other than be the weirdo smelling jeans in the store before I buy. Does anyone know of any jean companies that don’t use harsh chemicals? Thanks!

  65. I’m sorry if this is a repeat of someone else’s question, I, as a mom myself, didn’t have time to read through all of the comments before asking this one:
Have you or could you please do comparisons for plus size jeans? Specifically Lane Bryant? I would be most grateful, I’m a size 16 and wear their stretch bootcut (sometimes a 14) and think I look pretty decent in my LB jeans (for my size anyways) but would LOVE to know what one of your comparisons would dig up! Thanks!

  66. The first pair of jeans I bought after I had my baby were from Old Navy. Straight into mom jeans, how sad :'( I bought them because they were cheap and I didn’t want to spend money on something 3 sizes larger than my pre-pregnancy weight. Never again.l

  67. I love your blog! The comments are great also!…although I couldn’t get through all of them. People are obviously passionate about this topic….wish we could index them somehow. Anyway, I’ve stumbled upon the most wonderful jean for those of us with a bit of belly and thigh to contend with, they are Paige skyline mid-rise and I love love love them. Found them in Nordstrom.

  68. I’ll admit I am a wearer or Gap Long & Lean. I have been for years. The reason I have been is because I’m 5ft10 (almost 5ft11) and a little curvy, so I have never been able to find jeans long enough for my legs or that sit high enough to not create a horribly exaggerated muffin top. I noticed most of your models are thinner woman. And I’m almost doubting my ability to get into some of the other styles/types. Do you have any suggestions or even pictures for example of curvier woman & their jean switch?
    Thanks

    1. I’m hoping to do some research and do a sequel soon, but try William Rast – they are long, and they have more room in the waist. The key to avoiding muffintop is to make sure that the waist isn’t too tight, and hits right below your belly button. An extra wide waistband helps, too.

  69. Just curious if the LA Idol Jeans are true to size.. i range from 3 to 5.. Just want to know if i should go 3 or 5.. HELP.. size i have to buy them online.

    1. All sizing is different, and I usually don’t recommend mail ordering because of that. LA Idol runs fairly small, and many box stores (like Gap, Express, etc) run large. So for instance, I wear a 2 at Gap or Express, but I wear a 5 or 7 in LA Idol.

  70. I really needed to hear this. I’ve kept going back to Gap, sucked in like an addict by their prices even though I’ve known deep down that they are crappy quality and don’t look so great. Any other tips on finding quality denim at affordable prices?

  71. Wow! Thanks for the eye opener!
Can’t wait to go shopping this weekend since (unfortunately) most of my jeans are from Old Navy.
My problem is that I am 5’10” and it is hard to find long lengths. Never have i come across a trouser jean in a long. I have found some success with Express jeans in their long length, but only if I wear them with heels; and these days I just can’t seem to give up my flats.
    Any suggestions?

    1. All of the designer jeans come in ridiculously long lengths – especially Rock and Republic, 7 For All Mankind, Genetic Denim and Brown Label. Sometimes you can find these on clearance, too!

  72. Years ago I used to buy jeans exclusively from the GAP because they were the only place I could get long lengths. Thankfully, long lengths are slightly easier to find nowdays as well as quality jeans are easier to find. I now get all my jeans from Buckle, usually either BKE or Rock Revival brands. They’re very expensive, so I only own one or two pairs at a time because as that’s all I can afford, but you rarely wash them because they hold their shape so well and they make your legs look long and thin and your booty look perky and amazing!! Also, they pretty much guarantee them for life. No turning back.

  73. I LOVED this article. Finding a great pair of butt jeans is my worst nightmare. I absolutely hate shopping for jeans. After 5 kids my hips have gotton bigger, and I have “FLAT BUTT” syndrome. So I find a low rise works best for me. I havebecome partial to American Eagle Outfitters. Though they don’t seem to be making my favorite brand any longer. I LOVE those Express Rock jean, but have never heard of them. Where can I find them??? I wish I could take you shopping with me. I don’t have my 20 something body anymore, so I need a good jean to help me fake it. Can you HELP me????

  74. I LOVED this post! I have yet to find a pair of jeans that aren’t mom jeans and that actually look good on me. I’d given up hope but may head to the mall and look for some of the ones you recommended. Wonder if they are here in Canada too?…

  75. Where do I buy some of the jeans listed? The Express ReRocks look fab!
I live in Canada, in a wasteland of Gap and Old Navy. You should see my closet. I’m going to try on jeans this afternoon and do a toss. Oh so very sad.

    1. The Express ReRocks are sold at Express, which I don’t think is in Canada. The rest should be available through department stores or boutiques there!

  76. So glad to find this! Like Alyse, I’ve been a Gap long and lean wearer for many years, I used to love them, but lately they stretch out and tear at the crotch, butt and knee, sometimes when only a few month old (I’ve returned several pairs and complained!). I’m 6 ft tall, have narrow hips, but a bit of a belly (which the mid-rise is good at camouflaging), and thick thighs. They seem to be the only jeans I can find that are comfortable and fit and look good on me, but I’m sick of the lack of quality and stretch-out. So I need a new jean! Any ideas for us super tall girls, I really need the length (I always order the extra-long), I’m all legs and like to wear clogs. I’m also a mom, but don’t want to look like one, but I need a value.

    1. I’m a big fan of midrise, too. The best long jeans are Rock and Republic, 7 For All Mankind, Brown Label, and Genetic Denim. They are expensive – I do admit that. But look around department stores to find them on clearance – I’ve gotten some for as little as $22! It’s worth a little extra scavenging (or saving!!) – and they last forever.

  77. LOVE this post, thought something had gone wrong with my build since ON jeans looked so crappy on me now and used to be hot. A friend practically pushed me to American Eagle so things are MUCH better now, but very interested in the other brands you mentioned. BUT… I live in Interior Alaska, pretty much none of the stores you mentioned are here. I’d like to find out about Vault – need someone in Alaska? Thanks!

  78. Consider my mind blown…..I think you just saved my butt!
What are your thoughts on no back pocket (which I may or may not be wearing at the moment)

  79. I have to agree and dissagree here. I agree that the right fitting jeans depend on the cut and manufacturer. But I totally disagree on price! I have never paid more than $20.00 on a pair of jeans(mostly because I can’t afford to with 3 kids). I have definitely tried different brands and cuts to find my perfect jeans. But I found that most of the more expensive jeans like American Eagle and Areopostal have not lasted. Where as my Walmart and Target jeans have lasted me 3 or more years and still haven’t ripped. But I did also notice Gap did change there cuts within the last few years.

  80. I am just astonished at the difference and I thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I have been so sad about my mom jean status and now I see there is hope. I had bookmarked a jeans website that required payment before getting recommendations…had not actually ponied up yet…so I thank you once again for this free service!

  81. What brands/stores can you recommend for us plus-size ladies? I’ve got a flat butt and 2 c-section belly but skinny legs – Lane Bryant is the only place I’ve been able to find anything that fits the belly/waist but I can nearly fit both legs in one leg hole! Not flattering. I need help and recommendations!

PS I ordered 20+ pairs of Old Navy jeans last week to try on a variety. They’re ALL going back!! Ugh!

    1. This me too except I don’t have the c-section belly (just the carried 3 babies belly). I have no butt and skinny hips/ legs but I’m still “plus sized” in a 16-18 depending on brand. I would love to know what brands you would recommend…especially on a budget (but I would be willing to think about splurging if they were really really good!)

  82. Thank you for this article! I saw it on pinterest. I have bought Gap/ON jeans for years because I am six feet tall, and then had tall jeans back before anyone else did. I tried on some Gap Original Flare jeans and took a good long hard look at my butt in the mirror and I saw it!! MOM JEANS! Ack!

  83. I’m in serious need of help finding non-mom jeans, but the truth is, jeans NEVER fit me. I’m small waisted with large thighs and an extremely long torso. I wear a size 8 (or a 29-30″), but I find that designer jeans are made for girls with thinner legs. I have tried on jeans of all price ranges, and they were clearly made for women of a different shape. Most jeans give me muffin top, or let my butt crack show, or have a huge gap at the waist. So in the end, I buy the cheap ones, the ones I know are Mom jeans, because since I am not going to like them anyway, I might as well not pay much for them. And I rarely leave the house in jeans so no-one else sees them. In public, I live in skirts and black slacks. I could really use some jean type and style advice. What help have you to give your big thighed, small waisted friends?

    1. Try Express’ Stella cut, Joe’s Jeans curvy fit, or if you can find them, LA Idol. I think all of these would potentially be a good fit!

  84. I’m curious whether or not you have an opinion on American Eagle jeans. I used to think they were the only jeans that fit me right (I’m petite, but juniors’ sizes never fit quite right, as they run in odd sizes, whereas AE makes jeans in even sizes, plus they sell “short”), but I feel like every time they put out new clothes, they get tighter and less flattering (and the jean skirts are about 4 inches long now!). Any thoughts?

  85. where can we buy these jeans?? do you recoomend any on the cheap side. target, walmart?? some of us can’t afford 50 dollar pair of jeans :(

    1. I have not tried Target or Walmart jeans to know how they fit or hold up. I need to research them, though.

The cheapest ones shown would be at Express (with coupons and sales combined). The others are through boutiques or department stores, or through Vault Denim.

  86. At my height, I can’t be picky. 6’2″ tall with a 36″ inseam, long torso, size 14 or 16 depending on the fit. I have to take whatever I can find. Generally I have to order my jeans from a catalog or website so I can’t try them on before I buy them. Any suggestions? How about a tall girl sequel!

    1. Tall girls have it good IF they don’t mind paying for designer jeans – almost all designer jeans come in 36″ inseams – especially Rock and Republic, Genetic Denim, 7 For All Mankind, and Brown Label. You can also get these through Vault Denim at around half off, or watch for them on clearance at department stores.

  87. Oh my gosh…. this was the funniest story! I’m sitting here reading this while my family sleeps and I burst out into laughter because it’s so true! This made my day and I’m so switching jeans now. Thanks again!

  88. Well, I wish I had read this/watched it before I took my kiddos shopping-I just ordered a couple of pairs of ON jeans and all the ones I have that I wear all the time are Gap. Aargh. What do you recommend for skinny jeans, since I don’t think anyone out here does Vault?

    1. Express ReRocks are great skinny jeans – in fact, Express has several great pairs of skinnies. And Vault is pretty much everywhere in the US now – it’s just not heavily known yet.

  89. Now you have me trying on my jeans and worrying about my butt, LOL! I have some Gap Long and Lean jeans that I bought at a thrift store an year or two ago and they fit really well and I THOUGHT they looked good, Now I am going to have to snap a photo to make sure. I also have a couple pairs of Common Genes that I love, but who knows HOW they actually look on me since I ordered them online and never have seen my rear in them. I am going to check then out for “Mom Jean Syndrome.” Just the thought of having a blah butt is bugging me ;)

  90. Do you have any advise for someone who is both plus sized and tall? I can only ever find one or the other, literally the only places I can find jeans that work for me is Torrid and Maurices (granted I live in Omaha Nebraska and refuse to buy online if I can’t try on first, too many bad experiences) I don’t think those are mom jeans, but after wearing them for a couple months I get crotch or thigh ripping! The one plus is the most I pay is $60 for a pair but if they constantly rip that adds up. Not even kidding I only have one pair right now :-(

    1. I’m not sure – I’m doing research for a plus sized sequel post this weekend. Have you tried Buckle? They have nicer quality jeans – I wonder if they hold up better!

  91. I am wearing Old Navy Sweetheart Boot Cut Jeans today. My baby turns 1 in a week. I need to go shopping. N.O.W.

  92. This made me laugh so hard today because it’s so true. I have been guilty of wearing the Old Navy divas until I replaced them with some Paige premium denim last year; I have a happy butt now! I don’t think anyone realizes that Gap/Old Navy sells gateway mom jeans. Thanks for the enlightenment and a some good laughs.

  93. This is ridiculous. You get what you pay for. If you are willing to spend more then $25 for a pair of jeans, then go for it. But to expect a pair of $25 jeans to work magic on your butt is outrageous.
Have you ever worked retail? You should try it. Going into a fitting room and trying on every style for “research”, is crap. Don’t worry about the time it takes to get the denim wall to be folded, or the payroll it takes to run all of your styles back to sales floor. Old Navy has affordable clothing. Don’t expect what you aren’t paying for.

  94. This is ridiculous. You get what you pay for. To expect a pair of $25 jeans to work magic on your butt is outrageous. Pay for designer jeans and get amazing results. Have you ever worked retail? You should try it. Trying on every style for “research” is nonsense. Never mind all time it takes to fold a denim wall or the payroll it takes to place all of your “research” jeans back on th salesfloor. Old Navy sells affordable clothing, not magic makers.

  95. Funny and informative post. I actually have never been able to wear Gap or ON jeans. I’m excited to go check out the brands you suggested. Just did bathing suit shopping this week and we all know how exhausting that is, so jean shopping will have to wait until I’ve recovered….

  96. ok i am a total mom jean girl!!! And i thought i wasnt until i saw this and now im like OMG….here is my issue…im a size 16-18 with a long inseam….most plus size jeans only come in shorter lengths….so i usually buy from Lane Bryant…which now as i see totally give me a mom butt!…Anyone know of any great plus size tall jeans that are hot????

    1. We have a few pairs through Vault that look good and are longer. But I’m doing research this weekend for the Plus-Sized sequel – keep an eye out for it!

  97. Has anyone tried maurices denim? I used to wear them in plus before I had gastric bypass and now wear Silvers in “regular” sizes from there. As I recall they are very nice and not too expensive ($29). Might be worth a try!

  98. I am forever transformed. Never again will I make this mistake. Where are yourfav places to buy jeans and what other pitfalls should we watch for? Thank you again for helping me see the error of my ways. Xoxo

  99. Whoa! I’m so glad I read this!! I have been very disappointed with ON jeans for a while now & couldn’t understand why. It’s because they are MOM jeans, it totally opened my eyes. After reading this I went upstairs & tried on all of my jeans (which are all ON brand btw) and saw mom butt with every pair I tried on. Needless to say those are now my outside jeans when we go out on te farm or something dirty. I did go to NY & co and really liked their jeans, hopefully I didn’t get another pair of mom jeans ha. What brands do you recommend for those of us who can’t drop $100+ on jeans??

    1. Either buy through Vault Denim ($48-92 for designer jeans) or Express – with coupons + sales, Express Stella cut (what I often recommend) can be about $30.

  100. I was reading some of the comments above, about plus sized woman not fitting into the designer jeans as well as they would like, I am in between a size 13-15 in juniors or about a 14 in woman’s, I have a much bigger butt/hips/thighs, and a smaller waist, I’m not sure if anyone mentioned above but Vanity has their own line of jeans that look just like the ones pictured above from express, etc..They have up to a size 19 in juniors or Id say a 18-20 in woman’s, recently I got 3 new pairs for about $100 during a sale, the staff(usually) sizes you in the right fit/style/length, yes I said length(the have up to a 35 inseam in stores and up to a 37 online, I am 6 feet tall and long length is very hard to find in stylish jeans)which they order for you, it ships to the store, free of charge, plus if they are running a sale, it is included in the sale prices, I used to shop at buckle and these seem very similar, but I usually paid anywhere to 80-100 a pair, which is a bit pricey for me!

  101. You probably won’t believe I’m saying this, but Old Navy Sweetheart jens actually don’t look that bad on me! Like you said in the disclaimer, not all styles fit everyone the same, but I recommend the sweetheart jeans to either: younger girls (late teens) who fit into women’s sizes and young women who made have a smaller butt and want the appearance of some size. Just my personal suggestion, like we said different things work for different people.

  102. I have been saying this for YEARS! THANK YOU for giving me photographic evidence! Same goes for Old Navy’s khaki’s and work trousers. The trouser pockets are too high.

  103. I think this completely depends on your size. I have a bigger tush and the Gap Always Skinny in indigo is SO flattering. I have 2 of the exact same pair and am about to purchase my 3rd! As expected, the dark dye does wonders, but I think the real trick is that the pockets are a tad larger than the norm and really seem to fit my behind. (I’ve had jeans where the pockets being too small make my butt look bigger!) For someone very thin with a smaller bottom I can see how these large pockets would not flatter them. I always get great compliments when I wear them and in my opinion they really do LOOK expensive…..but cost less than half of a pair of 7 For All Mankind. And in regards to Old Navy…they’ve been suuuuper cheap for as long as I can remember. The low prices definitely match the material.

    1. YES – that makes total sense! One of my big mantras is to make sure that the pockets are correctly proportionate to your butt. Bigger pockets on bigger butts makes them look better.

  104. What about Levi’s? I think they have changed quite a bit over the years. Now everytime I buy them they look good when I put them on and 10 min later they are a whole size larger.

    1. Yeah… although some people seem to be happy with them, I tend to never recommend Levi’s. However, all throwback brands aren’t bad – Guess is actually still great. In fact, all of my husband’s jeans are Guess.

  105. Oh my gosh! This is just what I need! I am horrible at buying jeans! I love them but rarely buy them because I never buy the right ones! This post is soooo helpful!

  106. Came across your blog on pinterest! Very reassuring to know I’m not alone when it comes to finding clothing that fits properly! I’d love to hear when you decide to set up a new round of fittings! :)

  107. Open question, for the original poster Rachel (fabulous and helpful jeans insights, btw!), or any readers:

What are your thoughts/experience on American Eagle Outfitters denim? For the past several years, I’ve tried various jeans on there, and usually liked some, but something has always prevented me from buying them — I’m 30ish, and I just wonder — even though they’ve tended to look pretty good on me, are they “Too Young”?

  108. Hey, I loved your blog! I wanted to agree that I LOVE the way Express jeans make me look. And for everyone out there who thinks they might be too expensive ($98 per pair), I got a great deal this weekend! All of their women’s jeans are on sale for $49.50. I bought 2 pairs for $99 – Already a great deal, but I am on their mailing list, so I was able to use a $30 off coupon! So, I paid $69 for both pairs, which breaks down to $34.5o for each pair of jeans! That is so worth it! Also, I am short and was lucky enough to find my size in the short length that I needed. It doesn’t always work out that way.

  109. Oh my goodness! I’ve known for a long time that my Old Navy jeans weren’t quite right but I had no idea that those other brands could look so good or which ones to even try or where to find them! They always look like “young teen” jeans on the rack so I’ve never even tried any on! Before kids I either bought jeans at Old Navy or American Eagle. American Eagle has no hope of fitting me after 3 kids and before I can exercise enough to fix that problem. I’m 5 feet tall, 128 pounds, 30 years old and a mom of 3 young kids. Any off-the-top-of-your-head suggestions for me to try out?

    1. Look for a good pair of mid-rise jeans. Express, Rock and Republic, LA Idol… Hard to give suggestions without being able to see you! But just try some on till you find the right pair – don’t despair – they’re out there!

  110. THANK YOU! I have always HATED Old Navy jeans and for some reason I find myself always going in to buy a pair because I figured it was just a problem with me finding the right style of theirs and not that all of their jeans are terrible for me!

  111. Loved this article! thanks for the information. I appreciate what you said about pockets and butts but I would also appreciate it if you would address the subject of muffin top too. I have found the only way to get past a muffin top is a higher rise which is really hard to find in the trendy jeans. And no matter how great my butt looks it won’t matter if you see my gut spilling over the sides of my too low waist band. I am 5’11, 36 and a size 10/12 depending on the jean.

    1. Hi Alisha!

The best way to help prevent muffin top is a midrise, stretchy (but not elastic) waistband, preferably double wide with two buttons. LA Idol is a great brand for not cutting into muffin top. Also, William Rast is a big-waisted brand, so it also doesn’t cut in.

      Hope that helps!

  112. I just wanted to let you know that was the funniest (and saddest) thing I’ve seen in a while! I haven’t bought Gap or Old Navy jeans for a couple of years now and after seeing this I’m glad I haven’t. It’s just amazing how finding the right jean can make such a difference. Thanks for your hard work and research!

  113. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I just realized I am a bad mom jean offender. And i’m only 27! Sad day! I will take your advice and fix it asap!

  114. What does a 51 year old mom wear? I don’t think the Rock and Republic are appropriate. Last year, purchased LONG and LEAN at Gap and was pretty happy. No BLING on back, which was nice. Not a fan of drawing attention – back there-, but would like to have best shape possible. Any suggestions for this over 50 gal?

    1. Sure! Some good jeans with pockets with plainer (or no) designs to try are:

      Express Stella Cut
      J Brand
      7 For All Mankind
      Lucky Brand

      Hope that helps!

  115. I was SO totally concerned as I had just bought a pair of pink skinny jeans from Gap! But I did the butt check (and even got my husband to take a pic); and I gotta say: my rear view is pretty fabulous! So, maybe Gap jeans just work with me? Either that or my bum is just so perfect there is no way it could look bad in anything? ;-) Let’s go with that! FUNNY post mind you! I’ll have to tell my friends (who maybe have not been blessed with my perfect bum!)

  116. I tried to comment earlier today, but I don’t think it went through! The gist of it (in case I AM repeating myself) is: got some pink Gap skinnies; I rock them. My bum looks fab. So, I must be the exception…Or perhaps I my rear has superhero powers and can make any jean look good!

    ;-)

ps. very funny post. And it is amazing how much better you look in all the other pairs of jeans. And now that I think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad butt pair of jeans…I’m so bad (or good?) I don’t even check out the rearview when I buy a pair (overconfident?). ;-) But yes, now I am going to have to question everyone I see who has a bad bum: “Are those Gap jeans by any chance?”. And then they’ll think I’m complimenting them…and well, it’ll be an informal survey…one that I don’t tell people I’m conducting.

    1. You could definitely be an exception… or a superhero!

Your last comment did come through but the newest ones just aren’t showing up on my blog right now because of what we’ve had to do to keep it from crashing from all the traffic. Who knew do many people wanted to see my butt? :)

Best of luck with your survey!

  117. What do you recommend for those of us who are exceptionally tall with a long rise? I have been looking everywhere for jeans, but the Long and Lean are about the only ones I can find that have a long enough inseam and rise. I have found tons of jeans that look good from the thigh down and are long enough, but I can’t even get the blasted things shut because the rise is so short that I they don’t even cover up the parts of my anatomy that should not be on display for the public! Try shutting a pair of pants when the waistband cuts across the fullest part of your backside! They seem to fit fine and I get a lot of complements when I wear them, but they stretch and rip way too easily anymore.

    1. Hmm… I would try Brown Label, William Rast, Joe’s High Rise, Citizens of Humanity High Waisted, and I think J Brand has a high waisted, as well.

  118. Your photographic evidence is very convincing! I would love to take the challenge because the only jeans I wear are Old Navy. However, because of my limited wardrobe, I don’t know where to buy jeans. And how do the sizes compare to ON?

    1. Old Navy and Gap are sized extremely generously, so you usually have to go up one to two sizes in anything else, except for Express, who also sizes generously.

  119. I just want to say THANK YOU!! I’ve always wondered why I ended up not liking my butt in certain jeans but I always blamed it on the cut and not the actual butt! Is there anyway you can come to Texas and go jean shopping with me now? lol! I’ve been blessed and cursed with what my friends/family call the “J-Lo” butt and narrow waist. I love my figure but it’s so hard to find jeans that show it off just the way I want it too!

  120. Wow, great post! I was really wanting some of those Express Rerocks because, well, frankly both of your butts look great in them! Then I saw that they were $68 on sale {{{{{{GROAN}}}}}}. My two fave pairs of jeans are Angels and Paris Blues, both from Kohl’s clearance rack, that I bought for $7 and $9, respectively. Only problem is they are so thin I have holes in the bum where the pockets are sewn on and have resorted to wearing them with long shirts only now.

After having three kids and losing 135 lbs., I need my jeans and my bras to do three things: lift, separate, and support! And all on a budget…. apparently this is but a dream, but I still hold on to hope for the perfect $10 jeans…

    1. Yeah… I hate to break it to you, but I don’t think $10 buys high enough quality fabric to even make good jeans…Save up for a great pair instead of buying $7 and $9 pairs that tear and wear – I promise it’s worth it!

  121. So here is my dilemma – I am a new mom of twins. I am back to less than my pre-pregnancy weight but it’s like my body shuffled itself and redistributed weight in places I never had it and made me skinnier in others. But my long standing jeans issue is that I’m a total shrimp. I’m 5’0″… And hemming jeans never works out. Any good suggestions for non-mom petite length (that are REAL petite length – not like JCrew’s fake giant petite at 32″)? My favorites have been Ann Taylor Loft but now I’m going to have to scrutinize my butt and ensure it’s not a mom butt…

    1. What about Express? They have short lengths… I usually recommend that people hem, but if that doesn’t work on you (specifically if you have a short torso), then really just trying on jeans to find what works for you is the best option.

  122. Can I send you butt pics next time I go jeans shopping? lol
I am an avid gap jeans wearer, and only really looked at the length, since I’m 5’9 and all legs. Next time I will scrutinize my ass appropriately!

  123. I think the Diva Bootcut look better on you than the 7 For All Mankind and the Gap look better than the others on your friends. Those overly embellished pockets bring way too much attention to a butt.

  124. if you really don’t want to wear mom je anand it didn’t specialist will help you find the perfect fit for your body need to shop at buckle it’s pretty amazing

  125. Hey ladies I’ve got a petite waist, muscular but and thighs and I love miss me jeans they are awesome. Yes I used to love on and gap and the jeans fit great then I started wearing slacks everyday for a w years and never really bought new jeans then I went back to school and started needing more jeans and I was appalled by on and gap fit. I never thought I’d spend over 40on jeans but the more expensive brands are def worth it. Try shopping at the buckle they help with fit and style then once you find ones you like try looking online for better deals to save some money

  126. Found you on Pinterest and this is one of the funniest posts I have ever read. Keep at it my friend. You are a super talented writer and journalist.

  127. I LOVE THIS POST!! I have been preaching the very same arguement for years about ON and Gap jeans! Something has changed over the years and the only jeans from these stores that have I purchased and comfortably wear, are the maternity jeans. I am a firm believer in “you get what you pay for.” However, with Gap jeans, you are paying a good chunk of change and not really getting a custom fit. I have been a longtime buyer/wearer of Joe’s Jeans. If you have never heard of them, I suggest you take the leap and give them a try! I love 7 for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity too, but I think Joe’s Jeans have become my favorite. The are in about the same price range as the aforementioned jeans, so you can expect to spend a little more money,BUT I totally think it’s worth it to have a great fit pair of jeans that don’t stretch after 30 minutes. I see the other side of the argument, “that is just too much to spend on a pair of jeans!” If that is your fight, than you are obviously not someone that cares to have good-fitting, good (rear-end) looking pair of jeans! Nothing wrong with that, but don’t knock those that want to avoid the Mom-butt or saggy-buttness! P.S. Did I mentioned I love this posting?!? TIP: If you are looking for the premium jeans listed above, look at Loehmanns and Nordstrom Rack for deep discounts!

  128. Ok, I’m throwing away all my Old Navy jeans. But first, are there any flattering jeans that don’t have a ton of decorative stitching on the pockets? I like 7 for all Mankind, but they are a bit expensive.

    1. Sure! Express’ Stella cut has recently gone to no design on the pockets. You can also often find 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and J Brand (all plan pockets) on clearance at department stores.

  129. I too used to wear gap and old navy jeans… not any more… where did the space for your butt go? I now only wear “Common” jeans from JCP, brilliant fit with a rise that doesn’t disappear where it shouldn’t. I live in England and have to buy a few pairs of “Common” jeans when I holiday in the USA. I’m off to Vegas on Tuesday so will definately be buying some whilst I’m out there.

  130. This post came at the perfect time for me!! I found it via pinterest. I’m heading back to work soon after maternity leave with baby#2 and need some new fancy jeans for work. I am on a tight budget, so I was going to go to the Gap and Old Navy! Now I won’t for sure! I’m in Canada, so we have different stores. I may need to butt text!

  131. Rachel, Real Mom Nutrition posted this link on Facebook and so glad I saw it. Thank you for your hard work to do the before and after photos & doing the research. Now I know why all the jeans I purchased over the years from Old Navy end up in my “to sell or donate pile”.  They look ok & feel good after one or two wears and then it’s downhill from there & you can’t return without receipt or after waiting a few months. I’m size 14 and have an apple shape and because I have a large stomach I want it to fit well there but then it’s baggy everywhere else. I plan to try on brand types you showed. Are they all sold at express or some sold at somewhere else? Like LA Idol one, is that name of store? I know I can Google it too so let me know.:-). Also I can text you my number & be a model for you.:-)

    1. Express is a store, and they have great options. LA Idol is sold at boutiques or through Vault Denim. Unfortunately, I need models nearby so that I can take hundreds of photos – you don’t happen to be in Alabama, do you?

      Thanks for the feedback!

  132. I am extremely offended by this. I work at Gap. And I am 29 years old. I am a Mom. And I can tell you, that I have never once been told that I am wearing “MOM JEANS”. I get frequent compliments on my jeans, pants, etc. Not everyone can afford (or should finance) a pair of $300 jeans. Yes, Old Navy is cheap. You get what you pay for. But if Gap doesn’t fit you or your shape, shop somewhere else. I don’t fit in many of the jeans at Dillards, Nordstroms or Buckle, but I don’t feel the need to destroy their labels and criticize people who work hard to make and create what I think is a beautiful product. I have made a lot of women, young and old, very happy because they have a hard time finding jeans in an overwhelming floor to ceiling denim store. I get so tired of people ripping something apart, when they are just misinformed or uneducated. I’m sorry if the Gap near you doesn’t take the time for find a fit that’s right for you, but don’t rip apart a company that I work hard to represent, because I honestly believe in them. You want something to write about…write a blog about Pajama Jeans. That’s where your story is.

  133. Thanks to this post, I bought my first pair of Express jeans and oh my, I will never go back!! They fit so perfectly! I didn’t even know a fit like that was even possible! Thank you for turning my butt into a happy butt!

    1. It depends on how they look on the individual! Some people pull them off, and some don’t. Also, some of their cuts are good and some aren’t. So I have no blanket Levi’s statement! :)

  134. OMG, my closet is FULL on Old Navy jeans. And i know i have mom butt in them but have never paid attention before. I will 100% agree with the strecthing aspect of them. Within 30 minutes of putting them on im contantly pulling them up b/c the waist is loose as well as major stretching in the thighs. Well all i can say now is “shopping spree” YAY!

  135. I love the gap jeans I currently work there and although some of there fits are too long on me overall they fit me great. Our skinny jeans and legging jeans flatter my body and they hold up really really well. The only ones I had a problem with stretching a lot were the sexy boyfriend and that is because they have more spandex then the other gap jeans. Any jeans from any store with spandex will stretch out more as you where them.

  136. While I agree, these jeans do not look good on you, I don’t think this is true for everybody. Or even the majority. In fact, my friend who has been wearing expensive Lucky, 7 for all mankind, and True Religion jeans recently did a similar “experiment” and her pictures (put side by side exactly like yours) proved the opposite- Gap jeans made her look taller, slimmer, and defined her curves much better than the more expensive brands she is used to buying. Now she’s a firm Gap Jean believer. The other jeans you show here do make a difference to your body, however I absolutely hate the flashy style of them. I’m not in junior high anymore and have no desire to have my booty sparkled and bedazzled like almost all the “better fitting” jeans you have in these pictures. Are there any you would suggest for fashionistas who prefer a little classier, less flashy jeans?

  137. I loved this post! (Saw it on Pinterest) I took your recommendation for Express Rerock–I bought a pair and love them! So flattering! Thanks for saving this mom bum! :)

  138. ok. i totally wish i had you to shop with. i used to be able to get great jeans that made me look and feel great now it seems like i can’t find any jeans that do that (at least none in my budget) but this will hopefully help me in an attempt to buy better jeans

  139. This is a great post! I’ll have to go through and read the comments, but what I can’t figure out is how to find jeans that look good that aren’t low rise. I just can’t wear those or I’ll spill out the top. The Express ReRock jeans are cool, but are low rise. Any tips?

    1. Almost all of the jeans I recommend are midrise, because low rise doesn’t work for many people. Great brands that have midrise are: Express Stella Cut, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens, Joe’s, LA Idol, and Miss Chic.

  140. Whoa…this makes me question all the jeans I own! Oh how ashamed I am! haha What a great read! This was very helpful!

  141. Hey Miss Rachel! I just discovered your blog and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post! OMG FINALLY!!!- Amen sister!! I have been preaching old Navy Jeans=NO NO for years. I would LOVE it if you gave me permission to re-post this on my blog using your link on my open ended never ending “clothing commandments” blog posts on my blog House of Snob @ http://www.novamenteaz.com. This is such great evidence of what I have been trying to tell ladies for years. I commend your courage to go into these stores and back dat a@s up with booty photos as bonafide evidence. You are a brave lady! Your booty looks great in the Express rerocks though! You’re so tiny! :) I love this it’s brilliant and brave! Thank you SO MUCH from House of Snob and all the “sad booties” of America!

    1. I tried going to your site, and it didn’t come up in my browser. Is it spelled correctly?

At any rate, you’re welcome to link to my post, use a picture or two, and post a small excerpt from it! I’d rather the whole post not be republished, though.

  142. Rachel – your posts on Mom Jeans have been utterly fabulous! What a God-send! NOT that I was wearing Mom Jeans, as I hold my faded flares close to my boho-loving heart, but I never really knew the factoids about pocket placement.

However……after ordering and trying on a pair of ReRock jeans from Kohls, even though the waist fit me great and the pockets looked good, the bootcut started soooo low on my leg! I have larger calf muscles (thank you, Dad) and run for exercise. So I have to send these jeans back because my calves were being strangled!

My question is this: What great fitting bootilicious jeans can you recommend for us big-calf girls that the flare starts at the knee and not at mid calf?? Thanks so much, Rachel!! ♥

  143. I laughed so hved while reading this! And the whole time I was thinking of all the gap jeans that are or have been in my closet over the years. I asked my boyfriend if he ever remembered being embarrassed of a potential mom butt. Luckily he never recalled the visualization!

Thanks for the info…can’t wait to go buy new jeans now!

  144. I just want to know where i can find jeans that are non-stretch…..no one sells them! unless u buy mens…and those sure arent flattering….
