As soon as Chris and I first heard of the Red Mountain Park Project, we were elated. We’ve been known to explore random wooded parts of our city just to say that we could, so a giant park (1,200 acres!) with multiple trails and scenic views…we couldn’t wait for it to open.

And then it did open…but we had a new baby…and life was busy…and we have not spent nearly the amount of time that we wanted exploring our city’s gorgeous new greenspace. But we intend on righting that situation this spring and summer.

Besides just being a park with multiple trails and beautiful views, they have an exciting zip line tour of the park (in which even children over 6 are allowed to participate,)

and, opening on May 1, the Hugh Kaul Beanstalk Forest.

I’m excited about this one-of-a-kind experience, as it will be a sky-high adventure including bridges, zip lines, and obstacle courses. You can decide what activities you want to accomplish and do them at your own pace, and will get to experience Red Mountain’s beauty from an entirely different level.

I wanted to start with the Zip Line Tour, though, because I’ve always wanted to try one. So I was thrilled when the Red Mountain Park Organization contacted me and invited me to try it, as well as bring a couple of you with me!

So. Chris and I will be zipping through the forest on Sunday, May 19 at 2pm, and we have two extra tickets for you to join us. I will be giving away the pair together, so whoever wins can bring the guest of their choice.

If you would like to be entered to win the pair of Zip Line tickets, simply comment on the post and tell me your favorite thing about living in Birmingham (or whatever city you live in, but I kind of assume it will mostly be local people who will want to win this prize. But feel free to drive from Africa to zip line with us if you’d like!)

After you comment, make sure you click that you have done so on the Rafflecopter widget below, and it will also give you more options for extra entries:

  1. Too funny! A few in my office were able to go to the preview event and are STILL sore from that beanstalk forest! Would love a chance to step out of the comfort zone and zip away and be free!

  2. Oh, how fun!!!! Right now our favorite thing in Birmingham is the Botanical Gardens. Free? Open all the time? yes, please. Although we went last night and Andrew got two ticks so…. you know, BOO.

  3. My favorite thing about Birmingham right now would be a tie between Oak Mountain State Park + Moss Rock. I haven’t been to Red Mountain Park yet so I hope to add it to my list of favs!

  4. I love Red Mountain Park, Sloss Furnace, Railroad Park, The Civil Rights Institute, our awesome food trucks… lots of fun stuff to do all year round!!

  5. Our favorite thing is the zoo right now! Annalise loves all the animals
And me and joe enjoy walking and talking :-)

  6. I have so many favorite things about living in Birmingham, hard to pick just one! I love, the friendly people, the fact that you can get a lot of house for your money, the plethora of fun things to do, and seriously April in Birmingham is simply spectacular!

  7. Only one favorite thing about Birmingham? How about the variety of things to do? Botanical Gardens, great seafood restaurants and coffee shops, PARKS and cool libraries sprinkled all
over the city, the AL Symphony concerts, especially the free ones.

  8. My favorite things about Birmingham…hmm…SMI, Sitar Indian Cuisine, McWane Science Center, my small group, and Moss Rock Preserve. I love zip-lines, so I neeeed to win!

  9. Have fun!! I’m to far away to enter, but love giveaways, so hopefully you have a blast with whomever wins!

  10. My family and I love to be outdoors. Which is what I love most about living in Birmingham. We have so much to offer from hiking trails (our fav is Moss Rock) to kayaking (cahaba river is out fav). We love to take advantage of local parks, like the dog park in Alabaster and Oak Mountain State park. And being in Birmingham we are smack dab in the middle of adventure-just 2 hours from the mountains and 4 from the gulf. The best of both worlds is at our feet. We are so blessed. And after working up an appetite, we also have some great restaurants. I love being a native of the HAM.

  11. Zip lining in Birmingham? Wow! My favorite thing thus far in Birmingham is the McWayne Center! Parker and I go all the time, it’s especially nice when it’s cold or raining outside. We also enjoy their IMAX theatre!

  12. I did a zipline tour in Queenstown, New Zealand–looking forward to seeing Red Mountain Park! My favorite thing about Birmingham is that it is a “right-size” city…we’re rarely more than 30 minutes from anything we want to do or get to! In some cities you give up HOURS a day just getting somewhere.

  13. If there is one thing I can tell anyone to enjoy in Birmingham, it’s the people. And then the Botanical Gardens. And then 2nd Ave North (What’s On 2nd!, Urban Standard, Charm, Rogue Tavern.. so much GOOD!).

And then the food… anywhere there is food in Birmingham, go and eat it. Restaurants, Dining Rooms, Front Porches. ANYWHERE.

  14. I have always wanted to zip line but unfortunately we are waiting on the arrival of our first grandson up north…no can do…can’t even try to enter the give away…dang.

  15. My favorite thing about living in B’ham is that even after 30 years it continues to surprise me. There are so many fun and free things to do here! Tim and I recently hiked a trail at Red Mt Park on a rare afternoon that we didn’t have the kids and the weather was beautiful. We saw people on the zipline above it and it looked like a blast. I want to take the kids back soon and hike to the tree-house , which we heard is really cool.

  16. Fav thing about Bham: the endless festivals, parks, hiking, etc that are for the most part free! Our weekends are jam packed every weekend & usually just cost the price of lunch! Bham for the win.

  17. We just moved to B’ham last summer. So far my favorite spot has been Shipley’s doughnuts. I mean, Oak Mtn State Park. Boo, fattening yeast in all your delicious glory! Yay, fresh air!

  18. My personal favorite thing about BHM is the adoption-friendly culture. I also love the beautiful believers and city wide body of Christ. Truly. In four cross country moves, I never lived anywhere like this before.

  19. awww Rachel!! Thanks for the invite- but it is a bit of a trip to get to you from here.. what with the two days of driving, day and a half of flying, two border crossings, 7 time zones etc. Course, Im also TERRIFIED/ PETRIFIED of heights… so this might not be the activity for me!
what? whats that you say? im not the only reader you have from Africa?? oh..
    ***ahem***
Ill just get back to my work then… never mind me!
    :)

  20. Love the colors of Birmingham, you can never get tired of the flowers, trees, scenery Birmingham has to offer!!!

  21. i live in huntsville now, but i used to live in birmingham. my favorite thing was bottletree cafe. they have THE BEST live music. also, the botanical gardens are free. and you can’t beat free. and i can’t forget oak mountain. there is so much to do there!

  22. I live in Helena, and we love that we are so close to Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama football, and a short drive to the beach! How have I never heard of Red Mountain Park?? We did a tandem zipline in Big Sky, Montana a couple of years ago but would love to try this one too! (Will have to do the Rafflecopter link when I get home, it is blocked from my office….)

  23. I love all of the energy of the newer generation committed to improving Birmingham and make it a better place. This city has changed so much in the last 5 years and will only continue to do so with recent additions.

  24. Yay for zip-lining! We have yet to visit that park, but we want to. My favorite part of Bham is that you can get to most everything you would need to in a short amount of time. We have so much to offer.

  25. I love the fact that Birmingham is finally coming into it’s own…developing more places to explore, eat, have fun etc. It is encouraging to see the city beginning to make another name for itself and not just being known for the civil rights issues that took place here. We can rejoice in our history and rejoice in the new future being built!

  26. I have never heard of this park but so excited to know that it exists. My hometown is Jemison, 45 minutes south of Birmingham. My boyfriend will be here from Georgia that weekend and I would love to win these tickets and surprise him with them!

  27. Me! Me! Pick me! My favorite thing about Birmingham is the people who show that southern hospitality. Seriously, there is no place like home in the South!

  28. I don’t want an entry in the contest because 1. A certain very hot place would have to freeze over before I zipline anywhere. I am deathly afraid of heights. 2. As much as I would love a road trip to Birmingham driving from Gainesville isn’t really an option right now.

But I wanted to tell you my favorite things about living in the Gainesville Area and since I am not a native of Gainesville Florida I want to give a shout out to my home town of Brandon(Tampa area). So the favorite thing about Gainesville area are the natural springs. We have several and they are beautiful and make for a nice outing whether you are brave enough to tubing down the spring fed river and even swim in the springs or you just want to sit and enjoy nature around it makes for a beautiful day.

My favorite thing about my hometown is the HB Plant musuem at the University of Tampa. It is a beautiful building on the River/bay.

    1. I just realized my opening statement may not have sounded so polite. I didn’t mean it that way. I don’t want you to waste an entry on me because I am not local and even if I was I couldn’t zipline it would mean a full on panic attack. Hovering in the corner in the fetal position.

  29. So many things that I love about Birmingham…….the history, all the great parks, downtown, etc. it is an amazing place to live!

  30. Off the top of my head, my favorite things about Birmingham right now are trees, minimal traffic (remember I lived in Atlanta for a while), and Steel City Pops ;-)

  31. I’m new to the area and can’t wait to check it out with our Boy Scout Troop! So far I love the “Mayberry” effect in Homewood :)

  32. Ooooo. Favorite thing about B’ham? Botanical Gardens and the random green-space hikes in and around.

  33. There are so many things I love about Birmingham; the history, the food and all of the great things there are to do. My absolute favorite part is Samford because that’s what brought me to the city in the first place.
