Gap Old Navy Makes Mom Jeans

Nearly every denim makeover I’ve done ends with the same conversation.

“I had no idea what a difference it would make – I thought I was safe with Gap jeans!”

Or,

“Oh my goodness why didn’t anyone tell me I was wearing Mom Jeans?? I thought that as long as I was shopping at Old Navy, I was fine!!”

Gap and Old Navy denim.  A subject that I’ve long struggled over whether to address publicly or not.  I’ve revealed the truth about them one-on-one for quite a while, but have feared the backlash of addressing it here.

I know it’s hard to swallow, because we’ve all worn them at one time or another.

But I must say it, because I am committed to being honest with you in all matters of denim.

So read it fast – like ripping off a band-aid.

Ready?

Gap and Old Navy sell Gateway Mom Jeans.

There.  It’s out there now, so let’s look at why.

I embarked on a reconnaissance mission to both stores accompanied by my dedicated husband/photographer, where I tried on every style of denim available.  I’ve gone through and analyzed the evidence collected, then matched them up with comparables in other brands.

But first, a few disclaimers:

1. Jeans can fit vastly differently depending on the body.  What may look awful on me could look good on you.  My points below are not blanket statements, just strong suggestions.

2.  We tried to match camera angles as well as possible, but seeing as how we were on an intensely covert operation and there was an especially nosy associate working the dressing room during our mission, not everything could be perfected as we wished.

3. Some people buy Gap and Old Navy because they are inexpensive.  Almost all of the jeans pictured can be attained for about the same price as a pair of Gap jeans. (My current favorite way to get designer jeans at half off or more is through Nordstrom Rack or their app, HauteLook.) Good fit does not have to be expensive.

Let’s start with Gap.

1. The first style I tried on was called Real Straight.

Gap Real Straight

These jeans, on the surface, do not qualify for the number one definition of Mom Jeans: pockets ending before the lower curvature of the butt.

However, they do have some concerning areas that clearly qualify them as Gateway Mom Jeans.  Specifically, they make an unattractive inverted heart betwixt the cheeks, and the pockets are SO DANG GIGANTIC that they could hold a small Llama.

Gap Real Straight Problem Areas

Perhaps on their own, it’s not clear enough.  For comparison, here they are as compared to an Antik straight leg:

Gap Straight Vs Antik Straight

Yes, that is the same butt.  No, I didn’t starve myself between the two photos.

2. Next I tried on Gap’s Always Skinny.

Gap Always Skinny

Again, these aren’t terrible.  But they’re not great.  They give me an extremely wideset rear view, and repeat the Kangaroo Pouch Pockets.

Notice the width shrinkage when compared to a well-shaped pair of skinny jeans bought from a neighboring mall store:

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny

You can see how the smaller pocket, in this case, gives the curve and lift to offer pep and life, rather than a flat, weighed down look.  Also, specifically on a skinny jean, the smaller pocket helps lessen the inverted triangle issue by separating the butt from the thigh.

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny Side

(You might remember that we discussed the flattering qualities of large pockets in a prior post.  While this is true, when the pockets are disproportionately dinasauric, the effect is not nearly so ideal.)

3. The next pair I tried on was the Gap Original Fit.

Gap Original Fit

Clearly, these are horrifying.  Especially note how the pockets are so wide-set that it gives me a third butt cheek, and the tapered yet loose leg is classic Mom Jean.

Gap Original Fit Problem Areas

Also?  No one should EVER need a zipper THAT LONG.

Gap Original Fit Zipper Length t

If you desire something classic yet modern and flattering forgoodnesssake, by all means go with a nice, conservative 7 For All Mankind.

4.  Let’s move on.  Quickly.  To Gap Perfect Boot.

Gap Perfect Boot

I found these to be the least offensive.  However, the pockets were still too wide-set and oversized, once again offering the appearance of a supersized caboose.  Notice the immediate shrinking sensation when compared to a pair of Hudson Bootcut:

Gap Boot Vs Hudson Boot

5. Next: the Gap Curvy Fit.

Gap Curvy Fit

Oddly enough, the Curvy Fit seemed to take away all of my curves and conglomerate them into a giant pile of lumpishness.

If you have curves and need room for them to move and breathe, Miss Chic or LA Idol are awesome options with quite a bit more visual interest and flattering fit:

Gap Curvy Fit Vs LA Idol

6. My next fitting was in Gap Long and Lean.

Gap Long and Lean

This pair was the only pair that qualified beyond Gateway and straight into Mom Jeans – at least on me, as the pockets ended significantly before the lower curvature of my butt:

Gap Long and Lean Problem Areas

However, one of my best friends wears Gap Long and Lean, and I’ve always been puzzled as to how they look so great on her – especially since we even wear the same size.  So, in fairness, I present to you evidence that Gap jeans can look right on the exact right body:

Gap Long and Lean Right and Wrong Body

Let me assure you, though – I have counseled many former Gap wearers, and the friend pictured above is the exception, not the rule.

So if you don’t have that rare Gap-flattered body and you want to look Long and Lean, might I suggest Rock and Republic – notice the immediate leg-lengthening effect:

Gap Long and Lean Vs Rock and Republic

7. The last Gap style that I found was highly ironically named…the Sexy Boyfriend.

Gap Sexy Boyfriend

OH NO THEY DIDN’T.

I SO wish I could have found these in my size to try on.

Pleats.

Darts.

Flap Inner-Only Pockets.

TAPERED. LEG.

Have you ever seen any man under 70 wearing jeans like this, let alone a sexy boyfriend??

I shudder to think.

But I did find one last treasure before I left Gap…

8. The Gap Denim Romper.

Gap Denim Jumper

Yes.  I was ashamed.

Gap Denim Jumper t

(And my cameraman didn’t like my visible bra strap.)

Just in case you missed it, the back waist actually qualifies this outfit as… Grandma Jeans.

Gap Denim Jumper Elastic Waist

I apologize to your retinas.

I rushed out of Gap and headed to Old Navy.

Which was somewhat akin to jumping out of the frying pan and into the nuclear incinerator.

I tried on every style that they had in both bootcut and skinny, but neither leg choice was better than the other.  So, to summarize, here are all three of their major styles in bootcut.

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison

The Diva was the least offensive, but still lacked style or a flattering cut.

The Dreamer copied Gap’s main problem of wide-set pockets and triple butt.

And the Sweetheart was unapologetically a hardcore Mom Jean.

Just in case you needed a healthy comparison, I offer them against 7 For All Mankind:

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison with 7 For All Mankind Stacked

Lest you think that I have somehow doctored my photos (which I have not) or that this information is only applicable to my body type, here are a few examples of others who have been freed from the noose of Gateway Mom Jeans:

Subject A, a close friend who had no idea how flattering and comfortable great jeans could be:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol 2

Subject B, a blog reader and mom of four kids:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol

And Subject C, a new Mom and blog reader from the other side of the country who got a long-distance makeover via the following before-and-after butt-texts:

Makeover Gap to Express Rerock

(Yes, I get butt-texts quite often, usually accompanied with the question, “Are these Mom Jeans?” If you need to butt-text me, just let me know and I’ll give you my number.)

After Subject C bought her jeans, she sent me a couple more full-length before and after photos (with an adorable baby leg included as a bonus):

Makeover Gap to Express Full

But.

Even if you look great in Gap jeans – even if they fit you perfectly, the pockets are proportionately correct, and the style was made for your body type, here is my biggest argument against Gap and Old Navy Jeans:

They stretch out.

Ferociously.

Unforgivingly.

Ridiculously.

Gap and Old Navy Stretch Out

So even if they don’t look like Mom Jeans when you put them on, they will before the next episode of Dora the Explorer is over.

  1. I am soooooo glad I found this. I have never shopped these two places bc of the mom jean factor. However, I have also spent wasted time at The Buckle and American Eagle. (16 pairs of jeans at B, and 18 at A) Never buying any of them. My hardest time with pants is that I have larger thigh muscles, in proportion to the rest of me. Any suggestions?

    1. Look for a very stretchy jean, and also one that gives extra room in the thighs. Red Engine and LA Idol are great for this. Also, stick to a bootcut.

  2. I am in LOVE with this site, but I have to point out that 1) the Old Navy clam digger (baby leg) actually fit well, as that style looks a bit ‘trying-too-hard’ if any tighter, and although I agree most of the ‘improved’ pockets are in fact more flattering, it also depends on how a woman wants her jeans to fit over-all.
I don’t do clinging&screaming any more, and the more ornate embroidery usually looks awful if slung loosely…so my challenge *for my age and shape* is always to fit the right rise (not teenybopper, not grandmotherly) with – YES – the all-important pocket placement. I didn’t see you mention it, but the other qualifier for Mom jeans is not only the pocket being nearer to the yoke than the low hip, but that the pockets are often too close together and emphasize too much the leftover…;) Tiny pockets, in this respect, are as bad for a different reason than large and flattening.

On to more examples, and thanks (really) for thinking of this.

I worked retail for several years, which lessens my guilt as I annoy other sales associates now while I stare at the back-ends of denim, to measure the spacing between and around before I even walk over to the dressing room.

  3. So I have to go to Express or 7 FAM? I am currently fighting an uphill battle with my mom who has promised to invest in better fitting clothes this year, but insists with all her might that any Gap or Oldnavy jean is good. The price is the main thing, so convincing her that investing may mean paying $50 or more is difficult. In addition, she cannot get over pocket detailing. A big “R” stitched into the pockets, or a thread that’s too much of a contrast from the denim, or even god forbid some faded wash, or “tiger stripes” as she says, apparently screams “DON’T PICK ME UP! DON’T EVEN GIVE ME A CHANCE BY TRYING THEM ON! YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A 20 Y/O NON-MOM BIMBO!”
Please help. How do I level with her?

    1. I can’t help you too much there. You can show her my posts, but she still may not like them! I can help with jeans, but not with Moms. :-)

  4. Thank you!! I saw this on Pintrest. If I’m not mistaken, you seem to be in the same odd place in life. We are too old to wear “junior”, but to young to wear “mom jeans”. I’m 34, mother of two wonderful young men, and a non traditional student. If feel old and out of style around those just out of high school were I attend college. I LOVE YOUR PICTURES! I’m taking my bestest friends and doing a search for the right pair jeans. Thank you!

  5. Nice post but honestly comparing Hudson’s to Old Navy is like comparing Kia to Porsche. Just a bit skewed. I buy all of my premium denim including Hudson’s at Goodwill and although the have gotten wise to high end brands and thus pretty EXPENSIVE (I recently spent $40.00 for a pair of Citizens YIKES) It’s still an option worth exploring.

  6. I ran across this fantastic post scrolling throug Pinterest – great information and visuals. I’m wondering if you can recommend any jeans I should take a look at. I live in jeans these days, but findt really hard to get a good fit. I am petite, but curvy, 5’2″ (on a good day) and about 115lbs, with what weight I carry mostly in my hips/thighs. I have a lot of trouble finding a jean that fits my hips/thighs and doesn’t gap horribly at the waist, or make my backside and thighs blend together… Any suggestions?
Thanks for a great blog – can’t wait to read more :)

  7. Rachel,
I’m a little late here but I love good fitting jeans and realized that I have not owned a pair of Old Navy, GAP, or BR jeans in over 10 years because they look terrible on me. Now I know why. Anyway I read a few posts about cost of good jeans. I just want to add that I have found great designer jeans at ARC thrift store like Seven for All Mankind, Citizen, TRue Religion, Big Star, People’s Liberation, Seven(express), Guess, and other brands that I have never heard of that look really good on me. It’s worth a try anyway if you have the time to sift through it all.

  8. Ok, I totally agree about the Gap & Old Navy jeans as mom jeans BUT I also really really don’t like the stitching on jeans like the Express Rerock, LA Idol, etc. I also think some of the bleaching is weird… so any suggestions for an apparently super lame 26 year old?

    1. Express’ Stella cut are great and have no stitching. Also, J Brand, 7 For All Mankind, and Joe’s Jeans fit well and have minimal stitching and fading.

  9. This was life-changing for me. I’m not kidding. I seriously thank you for this demonstration…I had no idea! My next move is to search out the brands you mentioned. I really can’t wait to be unmomjeaned (I know, not a word!). Thanks again!

  10. Love this blog!
I have been wearing gap premium bootcut size 12 in dark wash, thinking thats the best I could look in jeans! I’m 41yo, 2 kids etc…
Bootcut definitely is my cut, but the low rise makes it hard to bend over coz the world could then see my “granny panties” (bridget jones anyone?)… And it does gape back there, and after a while I am also pulling up my jeans etc… Is there such a thing as a non mom bootcut that is NOT low rise?!
Thanks!!! I live in MA otherwise would come to your jean party!

  11. Okay the pockets thing is so true. When shopping for jeans it is really important to think about the traits of the jeans and how they compliment the features of your derriere. So yep, the pockets of those jeans not flattering.. at all. Even for the people who look good in them, they will look better in jeans with prettier less massive pockets. However, I think another thing you should have mentioned was the importance of the wash of denim. Jeans made by express, R&R, Antik, etc. all usually do a complimentary faded wash on the booty (it helps give dimension to the curves). Definitely something to consider as well.

  12. Omg, just ran across this post! This was fantastic…and that’s coming from someone who isn’t even a mom. I absolutely agree with you on the stretchiness factor of those jeans…happens every time!

  13. I always thought shopping at Old Navy I would be safe from the dreaded “Mom Jean”. Turns out I was wrong! I’ve often called my Old Navy Sweethearts my “Mom” jeans….ugh!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!

  14. I wanna know if I wear mom jeans. I don’t have gap and all these other great jean places around here, so I gotta find what i can. I wanna butt text you!

  15. This article is UNTRUE for some women. Just because the jeans don’t fit on you doesn’t mean they don’t work for everyone. I’ve been in between a size 16-20 for over 5 years, and I’m 6’1″, so finding the perfect jeans is extremely hard and rare. The only place that I’ve even bothered purchasing jeans at is Old Navy. They last FOREVER. I’ve worn the same jeans for almost a year before they even began to rip or tear. Old Navy doesn’t sell mom jeans, they just don’t have flattering jeans for most women. I totally recommend them though if you are in a similar situation as I am.

  16. My biggest issue is the the zip … it has two metal grips at the top of the zipper (apparently every zip on the Gap jean is the same) … it’s ruined all the jersey / t-shirt fabric tops I’ve worn with the jeans, catching them and making small holes! Gap don’t care!! Good to see you point out they are unflattering anyway.

  17. Oh WOW, this is the most amazing blog post! I love it. My friend emailed it to me. Very thorough and informative, great pics, and so funny. You are great. I’m following you now!

  18. I have a question, the butts you’ve provided pictures of in the jeans seem small compared to people in my community. I don’t think Old Navy or Gap have good jeans for any kind of butt, BUT is there any way you could offer up comparison pictures of these jeans on women with rear ends that actually stick out?

  19. Sooo hilarious, thanks for keeping it upbeat and lighthearted. The tips and info you provide is very helpful and I will keep those tips in my non-oversized back pocket when trying on new jeanz in the future. THANKS!

  20. Jeans from the Lucky outlet store stretch out one whole size after 30 minutes of wearing them too! I have learned that if they are cheap or sold as BOGO or get the second pair cheaper, then they are to good to be true! Walk on to the next store and spend some $$$$ for good fitting jeans!

  21. Absolutely one of the *best* jean articles I’ve ever seen-I have it bookmarked and refer to it often.
I have a confession though-I very rarely wear my shirt tucked in so nobody sees my butt. I’m 5’7″ 130lbs with not a single curve to speak of (hate it-I look like a boy in my minds eye) I live in skinnys, tunics and pointy toed flats so I have many many pair of jeans that are way too high or sans pockets at all but the legs look great and that’s all that is seen. So cheap $20 pairs that only last a season or two are fine with me (think trendy coloured denim that will probably be out next year)-I’ll buy new ones next season and donate the old ones without shedding a single tear.
I have only ONE pair of expensive jeans that are butt viewing worthy and I treat them like gold.
One question- do you feel like heels make a diffrence? My friends *swear* that the same jeans with flip flops will look completly diffrent if worn with 3 inch heels

  22. Also 2 quick things to add- you can get great looking jeans but if you still wear ugly white trainers and ‘I give up’ Mom shirts it won’t make a lick of diffrence. Maybe do a post on other ‘Mom’ cloths offenders!! (like the I-made-it-myself-with-iron-ons-from-Michaels sweatshirt complete with mock turtleneck dicky my MIL presented me with or the free-radio-station-logo-giveaway-baggy tee.)

  23. So I am looking for a higher waisted jean… So many out there are too low and I feel like my butt crack is always coming out to say hello! I have citizens, joes, and 7fam… But they all seem to be too low of a cut… Any suggestions?

  24. I do like the fit on the other jeans, but I absolutely HATE hate hate hate the stitching on ALL of them. The bright white stitching again the dark blue or the ridiculous patterning on the pockets – I hate that so much on jeans. Blech. Are there any alternatives?

    1. Of course AFTER I post that I see your comment on another persons comment about what brands tend to be frill-free. Oops! Sorry about that. Thanks for the post/responses!

    2. There are plenty. Express Stella Cut has very plain pockets and is the least expensive “great” option. Others that are more expensive include 7 For All Mankind, Joe’s Jeans, Citizens of Humanity, and J Brand.

  25. Hey! This is a great post. I was wondering if you know what sizes to suggest for all these other jean brands if I wear a 6a at the gap!

    1. You will probably wear a 6-8 in Express Jeans, and a 27-29 waist size in the other jeans. I always recommend trying on before buying, though, because all jeans fit differently on every body!

  26. Okay, I am not a blog reader but found this on pintrest. I am forever yours! This is so great! However, I am currently a Gap wearer, size 14, 25 years old. I thought they looked good. I am DYING to get off work and go home and compare. And yes, they stretch, bad. They also shrink up. I always kind of thought small pockets were worse…

My main problem is, I hate all the crap on the pockets. If I wanted white stitching, sequins, and conchos, I would own a bedazzeler. Then I would be set. I want normal, good loooking jeans that are under $150.00 And the NJDJ that advertise they are great, are horrific beyond compare, even I can tell that. What brands to you suggest?

    1. I would try either Express Stella Cut or Torrid Sophia Cut. Both of those have very standard pockets and tend to look good. Also, Lucky Brand would be a good jean to try.

      Best of luck!!

  27. I wouldn’t say they are mom jeans on everyone – just turns out that is how they are on your body [this probably has already been said – but the point needs to be belabored!]…each body requires a certain brand of jeans – if one is lucky, they can wear several! For me, Express Stella is all that works…and sometimes the Editor jeans…and I have tried more than a fair few…it is just trial and error…

  28. Love this blog entry! What jeans would you recommend for someone who is 5″10, size 4-6, with smaller waist/larger hips? I have bought so many jeans, but can never find them long enough or the right fit…I always have problems with a waist gap or quick stretching out or my bottom falls out of them every time I bend over. Please help me with the right brand to try!
    Thank you!!

        1. The Express jeans come from Express, and the rest can be found in boutiques or department stores, or through a Vault Denim rep. I’ll be glad to see if there’s one near you if you’d like me to check.

          1. Hey- soo glad I found this blog! Can you see if there is a Vault Denim rep near me too? I live in Albuquerque NM but will be moving back to Seattle WA this summer if that is better, I can wait :) I am definitely buying some new jeans, it just would be nice to be able to try on!
            Thanks in advance!!

          2. I’m in oregon – where can I find the jeans you liked better? I was planning on going to old navy this week – oh my…..also I’m short so finding pants that aren’t to long is HARD. Recommendations on capri shopping?

            1. Where are you located in Oregon? I can check on a rep for you.
Capris are hard! But if you’re short, I’d go with a shorter capri – knee length or above.

              1. I’m also in OR, and I buy jeans at *gasps* Walmart. I’m not a fan of them, but they are literally the only place in the greater Portland area that sells jeans that fit me for less than $100 (without having to wait for a sale, since I live out in the boonies and don’t have a choice when I head through Portland, I want a place that I know has jeans that fit). I have EXTREMELY long legs (5’10”, and a higher-than-average waist). Like the disclaimers above, not all jeans work for everyone, but theirs work for me, although I end up going through a pair a year on average due to thin material and ever-exertion. But even though they usually have stretch to the denim, they don’t stretch out over time. I get the cheap pairs, because that’s what fits me the best, but they have a couple dozen styles, all with slightly different waist/hip/length/butt styles; which is great for finding the right fit. I’ve gone up in sizes over the last 5 years, but their juniors jeans still fit this 5’10”, 175 lb woman.

    1. Joe’s Jeans – The Honey. Order them from Nordstrom.com or something, I’m sure a call to customer service would work wonders. I’m 5’9 with exceptionally long legs, and always a problem w/ gapping in the waist. This is the only brand I’ll buy now, and I hand wash and dry so they’ve all lasted for years. Caveat- even within the same style (the Honey), there are different fits and fabrics. eBay has them too, but I suspect I bought a fake pair

    2. You’re tall, slim and can’t find jeans that fit? Men’s jeans come in tall, slim, etc.

I have yet to find anything that fits better than Levi’s men’s “shrink to fit” jeans. They’re like a board when you get them. We always wear them swimming in the summer and let them dry while wearing them. They soften after a few wearings and lots of abuse, and then they’re perfect.

Don’t get prewashed, stonewashed, ripped jeans for more money either. Wreck them yourselves. The newest women’s jeans are even worse than they’ve been over the past few years. They have no pockets or ones that are only 1″ deep!.

  29. Why God why!?! I wish desperately that I had read this article before buying 3 pairs of old navy jeans. And YES they do stretch out in like 20 minutes and are basically unwearable or emergency only. Additionally, Sams club jeans stretch out. I just wanted to save a buck, not look like I am soliciting nookie with jeans past my butt. And the leg stretching is ridiculous too. They look like I used to be really fat but have since lost the weight but can’t afford new jeans. Not awesome for someone who is already a size 12/13 jean.

    1. The least expensive “great” option that I’ve found is Express Stella Cut. They can be gotten fairly cheaply by combining Express’ sale and coupons. Hope that helps!

    1. I have them all in my stock because I’m a Vault Denim rep. I can hook you up with a Vault Denim rep near you, or you should be able to find them at boutiques and department stores – I’m just not sure which all stores carry them.

  30. Rock & Republic WAS by far the BEST “pear shaped” denim. Unfortunately they sold out to Kohls and the length is shorter and even though they are a “rock and roll/edgier” brand, the only styles they have is skinny or MOM jeans! (Go figure with a 7in. zipper, ugh!) So…I found HUDSON and they were amazing on pear shaped gal’s.. Problem, they supposedly quit making then ( says Jeanology in the mall) Whats a girl to do? :/

  31. Some companies are good for some bodies and not others. I weigh 108 and I’m 5’2″ and my cousin weighs 102 and is 5 ft… Gap works for us. Especially always skinny jeans and cords. I hate old navy jeans— they are mom jeans. At least on me…but not those Gap jeans. Although Guess is my favorite.

  32. I am laughed SO hard at this! Why? Because I have three pairs of the GAP jean styles you mentioned, AND I am wearing the GAP Straights right now! I LOVE GAP jeans…so comfy, good quality, and I get them on sale so they end up being around $25 most times. BUT…I am kind of glad I am not the only one that notices these things about this brand of jeans. I am sitting here at my desk and see, “No one needs a zipper this long…” I look down at my GAP Straights…”Damn…no, I don’t.” The GAP Straights I am wearing I bought a size up because they seemed a little bit tight when I tried them on at the GAP in my normal size. Well, after wearing them for an hour they are too big…ugh…way too stretchy. My GAP Curvy’s I bought in a lighter color, in ankle length, and they fit great! The GAP Perfect Boot style I bought to wear with heels, so they are long, but, they get kind of stretched out too. It is so hard for me to find jeans that fit correctly being petite, that I like, and that are not $65, and GAP seemed to be a good answer. Great article! Makes me want to check my butt out a little more in my GAP jeans just to make sure!

    1. I would definitely try american eagle! That’s where I buy a lot of my jeans and they fit like a glove on most body types. They have short, regular, and long and a million and a half styles to choose from. Just keep your eye out for their sales, they usually have them every couple off weeks. Happy jeans hunting!

  33. I’d love to see your “unusual” friend in the Gap long and lean – which “works” ? – in a size smaller of them next to one of her in the Rock and Republic jean.

  34. I totally agree with your assessment on the Gap/ON poor fit. They always give me what I call “poopy pants”. Basically my jeans look like a toddler with a full, sagging diaper; my ass is dragging the ground after wearing them for 30 minutes. And I can also absolutely agree that the jeans you have compared them with are much more flattering to your body. However, I absolutely loathe the embellishments on all of the pockets. I feel like a teenager with a “bedazzled” butt. Do these brands make jeans with a more subtle pocket or do you know of any other well-fitting brands that do?

    1. Yes! The Express Stella Cut or Skyscraper are awesome and have completely unstitched pockets. Other brands to try are J.Brand, 7 For All Mankind, and Joe’s Jeans.

  35. How do you figure out what size you in the LA Idol.. The olny jeans i ever wear are American Eagle..Would the sizing be the same?

    1. They’re going to be roughly the same, or one size bigger than American Eagle. But I always recommend trying jeans on before buying to make sure they fit just right!

        1. I don’t think so – the best places to check are small boutiques. Unfortunately, there’s no store finder on their site. Another way to find them is through a Vault Denim rep – I’ll be glad to help you find one near you.

  36. Great entry! The only jeans I fit in correctly “on a budget”;), are american eagle. I would reccomend these for any girl thats freakishly tall ” I’m a little over 5 ’11” and shaped like a twelve year old boy :/. Two kids did add a slight curve, nothing to get excited about but its something. I could fill two pages of high end brands, but if you have kids chances are your on a budget :)

    1. Help! I’m 6’1″ and larger after 2 kids than I’d like to be. I wear sizes 14/16
I tend to have to wear long and lean or gap extra long because no other options tend to be long enough. After 2 kids I don’t have time to shop around. Most jean lengths are inseam of 28-32. I need at least 36!!
Other option is men’s but they aren’t very flattering, help!

    2. or freakishly short lol. I am 5ft2, and AE jeans are the only ones I can find that fit right, I am also bigger on the bottom (size 8 or 10 compared to a 4 or 6 on top) because I carry most of my weight in my thighs and AE jeans work, “curvy jeans” gap at my hips but are often tight on my thighs. AE boyfriend jeans size 8 are fitted on me and look great.

  37. That was both entertaining and wonderfully informative.. thank you! Any tips on finding perfect jeans for short petite frames? Thanks for the info :)

    1. Hi Lia!

I’m super short, and what I do is buy my jeans at Nordstrom. They might be a bit pricy but they offer free hemming!

(Also, I’m super late to this and you may not ever see my reply, but just in case!)

  38. OK, I am a mom — a 50 year old mom. BUT — I do appreciate a good fitting pair of jeans, Where does a 50 year old mom who’s in as good shape as many 20 year old girls go for appropriate jeans?? Thanks!

    1. You have plenty of great options! Express Stella Cut looks great on anyone (and not too young), Ann Taylor can *sometimes* have good jeans (but sometimes are questionable), and J Brand, Joe’s Jeans, and 7 For All Mankind, if you’re willing to pay more.

  39. Thank you Thank you!!! I am never happy with jeans I buy! What is your thought on american eagle; arizona jeans. & london jeans (from victoria secret)??

    1. Express Jeans are the least expensive best option. I like the Stella Cut especially. You can also combine sales and coupons to get them about 50% off.

  40. What a great post, even though I am feeling a little self-conscious about my jeans now. I have no clue what type I am supposed to be buying. I know Old Navy is hit or miss with their selection. I always viewed it as more of a store directed toward “juniors” but I was in the other day thinking “Yeah my mom would like that.” Eek

        1. I would try Express first, then. They are typically the most inexpensive jean that I recommend, and can be under $40 when on sale and/or you have a coupon. American Eagle is another good jean that is relatively inexpensive.

  41. What you are overlooking here is that most of the comparable brands you feature have pocket designs that are unsuitable for anyone over the age of 16. I would rather wear Gap jeans at the age of 25 than look like I am trying to blend in at a high school pep rally…

    1. I totally agree! Its so hard to find anything but lowriders! I did see some light in the dark tunnel though-seems high waisted jeans are “IN”-and available. Try POLYVORE-or yikes EBAY!

      1. You know another brand that is great for us OVER 50 is JORDACHE! If its good enough for Heidi Klum–need I say— I like to buy VINTAGE OLDSTORE STOCK on EBAY and wherever else I can get it!

  42. You are a jeans butt warrior. Thank you. I found this post through Pinterest. So glad I clicked through. Well done. I just dropped a little over 15 pounds and am planning to shop for new jeans soon. This is helpful (and very funny).

  43. Thank you for taking the time and effort to do this kind of research! I feel the EXACT same way about GAP and Old Navy jeans. I can NEVER figure out why they look so horrendous on me! Now I know that it is those pockets. They are truly bad. I am always on the look out for jeans that make me feel good and don’t make my butt look like I stuffed two hams down the back of my pants. I will check out Express the next time I am at the mall. Thanks again!

  44. Interesting… all my jeans are from Old Navy and not one of them has stretched out, in fact I find that they shrink after the first wash and so I need to be a bit bigger so that the jeans fit better afterwards. I have even received plenty of complements on my Sweetheart jeans from Old Navy. They slim me down and make my thighs appear smaller and the bright pop of colour distracts from my extra upper curves…. Perhaps it is body type but I find the only jeans I have a problem with at Old Navy are the Rockstars… they don’t fit me at all (so much for fitting every body type..)

    1. Shrinking has always been my problem! I had tried for a couple years, going through pants, finding ON ones that fit, weren’t too long, and BAM! After one wash, the were almost high-waters and too snug. I knew I looked like crap, but I couldn’t afford better jeans. Now I’ve been wearing Jordache jeans for just $16 at Walmart, and they feel a lot better and have a more cinched in waist I’ve been wanting. I don’t know how they look in the back, but they sure feel sexier!

  45. I typically have a difficult time finding jeans because of the gap above my butt. I have a “deep” butt (as opposed to wide, I guess) and I have a pair of Old Navy Sweetheart bootcuts that fit me very well. They’re my favorite and don’t make me look frumpy in the least. The most difficult part, however, was finding the right size. You have convinced me to carry a mirror along when I go to buy jeans though – so I can make sure the back view isn’t bad! Thanks for the post!

  46. I found this post through pinterest. This was an excellently put together blog. I bought my first pair of “expensive jeans” from the buckle right after my son was born when my self confidence was low. I had no idea. I wish I would have seen this post 5 years ago!

  47. You are amazing! I have tracked down a vault denim rep in my area– what are your thoughts on American Eagle jeans for a mom– I am a 12-14 depending on the brand– I have a wide rump and thighs– Thoughts?

    1. American Eagle’s pockets tend to be small and low, so work best on people with small or flat butts. I would definitely recommend trying LA Idol or Express Stella for you. If you end up not being able to get in touch with the Vault rep, I can help you find one, too. Best of luck!

  48. Wow! After reading this, I have been so self conscious this week wearing my Old Navy jeans! I know they’re bad now! I’d definitely appreciate your help finding a great pair of jeans! :)

  49. I think this is kind of sad to be honest with you. There are some people who can only afford gap or old navy jeans because putting food on the table for their family is more important. Women are beautiful, no matter what jeans they wear or what brand. I just see no reason to make women feel they aren’t beautiful if they can only afford gap or old navy style of jeans.

    1. I just bought three pairs of Express jeans and with sales and coupons, my most expensive pair came to $45. That’s almost what I’ve been paying for American Eagle. I’ve also found that my Express jeans don’t wear out at the thighs as quickly. If you sign up for Express emails, you get discounts that can’t be beat. I also purchased two new pairs of jeans at Maurice’s, only $29. And they are awesome! I should also mention that I am the only one bringing in any income in my house while my boyfriend is at school and we have two daughters. When buying on a budget, Express is not out of the question, if you do it right! Good luck!

  50. Thanks for the info! I am 5′ tall and wear a size 12. My problem is when I buy bootcut it all gets cut off! Can you give me any advice on where to look for jeans that won’t be “too short in the straddle”? Thanks~

    1. Try Express! They have short lengths in bootcut. Emerson Edwards (through Vault Denim) would also be great for you – they have petite bootcuts, and the rise is lower, so they work well for petites.

  51. thank you thank you for pointing out the horrendous fit of old navy jeans. I once tried on a pair of EVERY style they had and nothing fit at ALL. Those long pockets! WTF???? I laughed when the commercial came out with all the different body shapes and they joked about the ‘tapezoidy shape”… well guess what. I AM the trapezoidy shape! I have wide hips but smaller thighs and butt, so if I don’t have a muffin top, I have saggy poopy pants anything below the hips looks like its melting. I’m also very short, which adds to the frustration.

  52. Ok, i may have to butt text you! My fave jeans are all on or gap, and i may be the mother to 5, but im still only 29, so now you’ve got me worried!! Lol. Any suggestions for the over 6′ crowd who needs at least a 36″ inseam and size 12/14? I cant even walk into a gap and buy jeans, I have to order online and have them shipped (same with every other mall store)…

    1. Feel free to email me!

My favorite jeans that come in a 36″ inseam are Red Engine, Rock and Republic, and 7 For All Mankind. Express also has a tall, but I don’t think they’re quite that tall (although their Skyscraper line may be.)

  53. Glad you have an unlimited amount of money to spend on all your jeans. You’re ridiculous and rude and to be honest this entire post is disgusting.

    1. No she’s being honest. And since when is Gap or Old Navy SUPER cheap? She recommended American Eagle Jeans which is ON PAR with their pricing and looks a helluva lot better than that Mom jean crap. Face facts. There’s better jeans out there that aren’t expensive but people like you are too lazy to find them. And if that’s the case and you don’t care how you look, good for you! That’s completely your choice. But be prepared for people to look at you and notice that you don’t care. That’s unfortunately NOT how you get ahead in life.

      1. How shallow. People don’t get ahead in life by having butts that look good in jeans. People get ahead in life by devoting time and brain power to worthwhile causes and being competent at their jobs, irrespective of what they look like. Sure, there are some “jobs” at which people can make a living depending on what their butts look like, but they won’t be wearing jeans to work. Or any clothes, for that matter.

    2. How is she being rude? She is writing about jeans, not trying to change the world. Life is too short to be disgusted by a blog post about fashion.

  54. Nice! I suspected that those stores did that, but I couldn’t confirm it. Cut really does matter.

For me, I wear Koal’s jeans, aka Mom Jeans. In between my height (over average), very long legs and very short torso (think a 10 year old), next to non-existent waist (I’m not fat, but very short there… and have a 2 inch difference with waist a hip). I wish I could find comfortable jeans that fit and look nice, but with a rule (long proven) that the zipper must be the length of my hand, I highly doubt that will ever happen.

    1. Try a modern flap pocket or small pockets – they help bring curves where there aren’t curves. Also – don’t be afraid to get jeans hemmed.

  55. Love this! I need so much help! Can you suggest something flattering for a 5’8″, 180lb woman that NEEDS to look better from behind? I just bought3 pairs of Lucky jeans and although soft and comfortable…they aren’t flattering. Please give me your expertise!

    1. It’s hard to tell without a little more about what shape you are and how you’re built. Pictures are the most helpful, if you want to send me some!

  56. I am a long distance runner and so my calves and thighs are really big. But I have always been a petite girl and so I have a small waist. My issue is that when I finally find jeans to fit my thighs there is always a big gap around my waist, and jeans that fit my waist are way too tight on my thighs. Is there a brand of jeans that you know of that would help me?

  57. For the record, guys, bedazzled butts are pretty “mom” these days. The moms wear them to look hip and young. I don’t see fashionable people my age wearing bedazzled butt jeans, just 40-year-olds. Get plain ones that fit right.
Also, those classic GAP jeans that you thought were too high-waisted looked fine to me. They looked the best out of everything IMO.
    -22-year-old non-mom college student

    1. Amen to El! I think those jeans with the white stitching and the big sparkling crosses on the back look horrible and very tacky. I see men and women in their 40’s wearing those trying to look “hot.” Gag….. I am a curvy mom in her late 40’s and I LOVE Old Navy jeans because they’re affordable, comfortable, and carry my size.. I like the boyfriend cut and the rockstar cut. I bought some electric blue which I thought would look too young on me but I wore them with a cute black top and got MANY compliments. I also have a pair of Apt 9 Skinny Jeans which are cute and comfy with a long top. I’ve heard that Jennifer Lopez jeans are good, too. Honestly, if you try jeans on and use your cell phone to take a pic of your butt in the mirror, you can find good jeans almost anywhere. Just choose the right cut and size!

  58. What are your thoughts on lucky jeans? I tend to like the Sophia boot cut and sweet n low, but question the size of the pockets. Body type is shorter and pear shaped.

  59. Thank you, thank you, thank you Rachel & sweet husband!!! This is so needed for myself and more people than I care to look at. Thanks for doing all that research! Whew, I’m tired just thinking about it. I can see from the amount of comments you’ve received it was well worth it.

    Hugs…Tacy @ Cotton Pickin Cute

  60. Thank you Thank you Thank you. I’ve been wearing Old Navy and Gap pants for over 10 years and have always just assumed that I have a mom butt. Seriously. My body type is similar to yours, and my butt looks just like all those Old Navy/GAP butt pictures. I’m shocked at how much better the other brands look! I really appreciate you explaining what about the pants make them look bad (especially the bigger, lower, wide-set pockets…..Now I know what’s causing the big, saggy butt look). I will be going jeans shopping soon- NOT at ON or GAP this time! Wish me luck!

  61. Thank you for this blog! I would also recommend Buffalo Felow Skinny jeans. They have a little stretch but not so much where they are two sizes to big after an hour. They are slimming and give the butt an instant lift.

  62. I know you mentioned you don’t mind getting butt texts, after reading your article I’m really curious to know if my pants are all wrong. My hubby won’t ever tell me I look bad in jeans (I was a total mess about my body image during pregnancy, so now I “look great” in everything lol). If you don’t mind I would greatly appreciate it if I could ask your opinion!

  63. Ugh! You’re so right I generally really love GAP, and right now they’re my go to jean. But they ARE total mom jeans; not so appropriate for a 22 year old. My bee-hind deserves better. Said behind deserves to be put in jeans that will do it some justice. Thanks for the reality check!

  64. Help Me!

I am only about 5ft. So when I do by jeans I have to buy short and sometimes still take them to a taylor.
I have a pretty nice size but and hips. I wear anywhere from an 8 to 12. I tend to have the problem of needing a bigger size for my butt but end up with that gap in the back and my crack shows and I spend every 5 min pulling my pants up.

    Do you have any suggestions??

  65. I found this blog through pinterest and loved this it! I have had the same problems with jeans from both places especially the stretching out! Just wondering if you’ve ever tried Banana Republic jeans? I have recently fell in love with their skinny stretch jeans but since they are made by the same company as Gap/Old Navy do they have the same problems? Obviously, I’m willing to pay a little more ($50-$70) for jeans if they are high quality since I will wear them all the time. What would you suggest for someone who’s 5″7″, size 6-8 and prefers skinny jeans? Thanks!!

  66. I sent your article to my sister and she replied saying you deserve a nobel peace prize for your pioneering work in this field. :-)

  67. Hmmm where do I start… I happen to love Gap jeans. I also happen to work there as my second job. I think u think they r ‘mom jeans’ because u didn’t really try on the ‘younger cuts’. True we make jeans for women not juniors but I’m 28 and they make me look amazing. U should have tried on the sexy boot, the skinny boot or the legging jean. Also we no longer make the long and lean or original fit because clearly they weren’t a big seller. Also they stretch with u while u wear them but really not that much, which is why we tend to encourage customers to buy them just a tad tight they will never shrink and start to curve with ur body throughout the day. Also our sizes run a little big so just try on a smaller size than ur used to. I kinda think ur just knocking Gap because they r one of the best selling brand of jeans in the entire world because u r trying to promote vault denim because it’s ur job. Honesty, women who want great quality at an affordable price go to Gap and have an associate pull different fits for u and try them on. Guaranteed u will be surprised:)

    1. Angela, I agree with you. While I don’t work for GAP, I have several friends that do and I think each brand or style of jeans fits different types of bodies better. I have fluctuated in weight throughout my life and there are times that I sway towards GAP jeans and times that I sway away depending on my shape. I will also say that while your article/blog post had some good pointers, the super embellished pockets are really only popular in places like Vegas these days… and I hate to say it but I mostly see “Mom’s” and Grandma’s wearing the jeans with the loud obnoxious pockets… but what do I know, I only live in San Francisco (hint, big big city with more up to date style). Overall I like the concept of this article but I think the writer unfairly picked on GAP and Old Navy. I also want to add that most of the jeans you are comparing in these images are in the $150-200 price range and the GAP or Old Navy Jeans are $50 or less. And Lastly, the image that is shown of the “stretched out jeans” are so OBVIOUSLY not the same jeans. They are not the same color or the same fit and the tag on each pair is different. Overall this is a very unfair blog post and I hope most women on here just learn to take an honest friend with them jean shopping and be open minded…. If you want a great fit be prepared to spend a lot but please, do not rule out Gap or Old Navy just because of what this one person said… and also, there are several shots where your butt DOES look better in the Gap Inc. brands… ie the sweetheart boot cut ON jeans are much better than the 7 FAM, and the LA Idol the Rerock ones are terrible… I am sorry, I don’t normally like to comment negatively on a woman’s appearance but those are god awful jeans…. they scream out 2007 and It makes me wonder where your Ed Hardy/Affliction shirt might be? Just saying.

  68. Could you please do one of these for women with curves? Particularly those who have small waists and carry weight in the thighs? It seems all these models have slender legs and so the fit is focused on their behinds. For the plus-sizes, the women all carry their weight in their stomachs and still have slender legs. Once more the focus is on the behind. I would like to see you fit women who need a smaller waist so their behind isn’t falling out, with pockets that don’t accentuate their saddlebags, or present their thighs in an unfashionable light.
Obviously, if these don’t exist please share that!

    Thank you!

    1. I know, and I agree! I desperately sought out a pear-shaped model for my plus-sized post, but to no avail. I’ll have to do a sequel if I can ever find me some models!

  69. I am in love with Maurices and all of the brands of jeans they carry. However I’m not a super big fan of their new Maurices Jeans line. I want to go to a different brand at Maurices, such as Silvers, etc., but I’m not sure what I should go with. Any suggestions?

I am a size 15/16 and have a bigger bottom half and a smaller upper body. And I’m about 5’6. I found your article soooo helpful, but I would like a little help if you could. Thank you.

  70. What do you recommend for a 5’7″ lady with ye ole pouch from having babies? I can’t buy up a size or two to fit up and over the pouch an still have it fit my legs and butt!

    1. Look for a jean that has a very stretchy waistband so that you can size down to fit your legs without being too binding on the top. LA Idol is excellent for this!

  71. Hi :)

Love your blog……its about time we women got some decent feedback on how to find the right jeans…..I have literally bought like 20 pairs in the last couple years and still can’t find the right fit! I am 5’4 and 154 lbs…..(have an illness that I take steroids for…arrgh…used to be a size 3 so this is a new struggle for me :(….) I have a small waist but a J-Lo butt and larger thighs……everything is carried down there lol…..my other issue is I live in a small city in Ontario, Canada so I buy a lot online or have to travel a ways to shop. Can you recommend any brands you can find in Canada and a brand that may match my characteristics?? would love any advice ;) to get away from that dreaded 3rd butt…arrrrgh!!

    1. I was looking at the vault denim site but have no idea of any of those brands and what would work for me…..all the models are tall and not as curvy in the trunk as me ;) nice jeans though!

    2. Unfortunately, I’ve had very few pear-shaped models volunteer for my posts, so I don’t have as solid of recommendations as I do for most. Red Engine, though, works nicely, as well as Express Stella Cut.

  72. This is so crazy how much of a difference the brand of the jeans can make. Thank you and where did you get your shoes?? Sooo cute!! :)

  73. I’ve never actually tried on GAP or bought Old Navy jeans. Considering I have a hard time finding jeans I like all together, I probably never will buy any of those brands. My favorite place to shop for jeans is Gordmans. I LOVE that place. Not only do they have awesome-tastic stuff, but they have my favorite brand of jeans: Amethyst. Amethyst jeans are one of few jeans I’ve found that are amazing. AND Gordmans (even Gliks and Rue 21) sells them for around $25. I enjoyed your blog & I’ll probably check out some of the better brand names you mentioned the next time I go shopping for jeans.

  74. I made the mistake of buying my maternity jeans at Old Navy. Especially bad since I tend to pack on the pounds at rear during my pregnancies. The wide set pockets made me look absolutely enormous. I don’t care how inexpensive the jeans are, it’s just not worth it.

  75. Ok, this was interesting but I actually liked some of the GAP jean pictures better! Some not of course. It is preference and you also need to fool with different sizing. I personally love looking for jeans at Goodwill but i also like my old navy jeans. I am on the thin side, but have ahtletic legs and they work for me. I am also 36 and can not imagine whering some of the jeans in the pictures, they are of course for a younger crowd!
I am sure this would be very helpful for many people struggling with finding the right jeans! So much more important to for the younger crowd, jeans are my hang around with the kids and I don’t care what they look like as long as I am comfy pants!

  76. Thoughts on Miss Me jeans or Silvers? They aren’t budget friendly but worth the cost when they last years. My problem with any jeans is how quickly they stretch out. I hitch up my pants constantly. I prefer these jeans because you can pick your waist and inseam combination. I have long legs and a long waist so jeans shopping is downright hellish. I can barely bend over without half my crack showing and squatting down is out of the question. Any other suggestions other than these budget busters that accommodates long tall girls?

    1. Red Engine is what I would suggest for you – they have longer rises and are really long in the inseam. They can be a bit pricy (the ones I have are $72, but I don’t know how they run retail,) but perhaps you could find some on sale? They also don’t stretch out.

A less expensive one to try would be Express Skyscraper. I don’t know if the rise would be long enough, but it’s worth a try!

  77. This entire post is stupid. I really think the jeans you buy always depends on your body type/weight/personal style. YOU are one person who tried on a bunch of jeans and found which ones look good on you. Good for you! GUESS WHAT. Not everyone has your body type.

Obviously these jeans looked good on somebody when they designed them, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone to production. Now you’re convincing all these women to never buy Gap and Old Navy jeans (even though there are tons of different types besides the ones you posted)…without advising them to try it themselves.

Also, all of the “Rock and Republic”/”rerock” looking “younger” alternative jeans you posted are trashy looking. I don’t want rhinestones on my butt, big fat seam threads, and ugly pockets.

I don’t work for Gap or Old Navy or frankly even care about Gap or Old Navy, I just think this entire blog post is shallow and lame. I guess 97% of Pinterest users are also shallow and lame too, though.

  78. I am realistically a size 7, it’s a shame sizes only come in evens! My butt is a size 8 and my legs are a size 6. I was given sweetheart old navy jeans in a size 6 and they look great on. You just need a butt that can fill it to avoid the dreaded mom butt :)

  79. What cut/brand of jeans would you suggest for a 2o-something mom who is 5′ 6″ and a size 2-4. I have a very hard time finding jeans that fit because I have very thin legs and no butt at all, but I do have some hips. If I find a pair of jeans that are big enough in the hips, then they are extremely baggy in the butt and legs. Any suggestions would be much apreciated!!!

      1. I went to American Eagle this weekend and bought 2 pairs of jeans. The first pair I purchased was a Skinny Kick, which is like a skinny jean but it flairs out a little at the bottom. The second pair that I purchased was a Slim Bootcut Jean. I ended up with a size 2 long in both jeans. Both pairs were $10 off, so that was awsome! I wore the Slim Bootcut today and this evening when I looked in the mirror the butt of my jeans were still nice and snug with no bagging that I could see. Thank you very much for your suggestions! I can’t believe that I found jeans that look good and hold their shape!

  80. Great post! I have 3 pairs of ill-fitting gap jeans. I have a flat bottom and no hips paired w a small post baby pooch (argh) and within 20 minutes of wearing them, they sag horribly in the rear end and start to slip off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Look for a jean with modern flap pockets and a stretchy waistband. The pockets give your butt more curve (small pockets also do this), and the stretchy waistband doesn’t cut into your belly.

  82. I am 34 and have never been able to find the right pair of jeans for my body. I am 4’11 and weigh 95 lbs. The closest I’ve come to finding the proper fit has been at Forever21 — I don’t want to be 60 and shopping along 13 year olds. Due to my miniscule stature and proportions, skinny jeans have become my only go-to option. Any suggestions?

    1. Try some designer brands – they come in tiny sizes, and since they usually go unbought, there are always some in the clearance racks. J Brand, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity – our department stores always have a good selection.

  83. Hahaha I have had the same thought about Gap and Old Navy jeans. I am glad you had the guts to take the pictures and put them out there. Worst offender: Old Navy Sweetheart jeans.

  84. As a girl who swears by Old Navy jeans I had a panic attack when I saw this. I read this and rushed to try on my jeans to see if they look “mom-esque”. Thankfully my body is much different and the jeans look more like the other brands you were wearing. The trick with Old Navy jeans is this: the bigger your butt, the better your fit! My bottom is unproportionally large for the rest of my body, so the pockets hit in just the right spot. HOWEVER, you are so right about the stretch! I always forget to wear a belt and after an hour I am struggling to keep my pants up!

    1. Hah. So accurate. I just got a pair of Old Navy jeans in the Flirt cut and while I am not 100% in love with the fit, it’s the best I’ve managed to find so far because, well, I’ve got a butt. And thighs. But not an itty bitty waist where most jean companies seem to think it should be, so most jeans that fit nicely in the legs don’t fasten comfortably at the waist, and if they fasten at the waist then they’re ridiculously unflattering in the thighs and butt because I have to size up so much. (I do actually have a waist, it’s just pretty high on my torso, and then I’m not terribly hippy. My shape curves more to the front and back than out to the sides, if you see what I mean.)

So the Flirt cut works for me because it’s got room for the thighs and butt but is straighter in the waist. (Like I said, it’s not perfect, and they did stretch out like crazy, ugh, but given that the time before this when I went jeans shopping I tried on every single pair in the store in my size and found exactly ONE pair that fit properly, never mind pocket style or anything else, ON is an improvement.)

That said, I am open to trying other brands – anyone have suggestions for what to try if you have muscular thighs and a butt but not big hips or a tiny waist? Preferably something with more of a mid-rise. (Higher rises look awful on me, and I am deeply skeptical of low rise jeans because overwhelmingly they’re more likely to want to fall off – no hips to hold ’em up – or not cover my butt if I move even a little, and no one wants to see my underwear because I bent over/crouched down/took too deep a breath.)

  85. Great post! Now I feel like I should take photographs of myself in all of my jeans to see how they look. I think my older Gap long and lean jeans from about 6-8 years ago are much more flattering than the newer ones. Have they changed them that drastically? I have tried on so many pairs of jeans from many different designers and all different styles and I must say, for me, the best is 7 for all Mankind. Yes, they are expensive, but totally worth it. They last much longer than most other brands, they are stylish, and they look awesome on me! I get compliments all the time. I try to buy them at the 7 for all Mankind outlet for almost half the price, but it is often hard to find what I am looking for. It is hit or miss. What is Vault Denim? What other brands fit similar to 7s?

  86. AAAhhhh so funny thanks for he read! Yes rompers never look good on anyone unless you are super short, and about a size 3! I have the opposite problem. Im 5’10 and cant gain weight even though ive had two kids! I weigh 100lbs on a good day! they are still trying to figure it out! Anyways I can never find any jeans that make my butt look big except for a pair of wide legged pants with the interior pockets and a slit to enter them on the outside! But the legs is aggravating due to the fact I like my tall boots!!

    1. But I have found out all jeans stretch out on me im constantly on the go with a 3 & 4 yr old boys!! So what is a cheap pair of jeans that will make me look like I have a butt? Cause my next option is the booty shorts!!! Im so tempted!! Cause Im just tall and skinny no curves no boobs!!

  87. OMG! I love this!!! I just found your article on pinterest and discovered that you’re from Birmingham, Alabama. I am also originally from Birmingham, Alabama but currently live in Maryland. If you get the chance, check out my website Style Life Fashion. You have definitely changed my mind about the brand of jeans I am wearing and looking forward to making an upgrade. This article was fantastic!

  88. I buy most of my jeans at Maurices and buy their brand. They are very flattering and do not have issues with stretching, etc. If you live near a Maurices check them out or shop online.

  89. What’s a good jean for a flat butt and wider hips? All of my jeans are loose in the front in the crotch/upper leg region because I have no shape in the back. Please help make my flat behind flattering. Thank you!

    1. Look for a jean with a flap pocket, a bigger pocket, and, if you don’t mind it, some pocket stitching. LA Idol would be a great brand for you.

  90. I have been losing weight, 10 pounds, hoping for another 10. Ive always been against old navy jeans, they dont have enough excitement for my taste, but it is hard to find a good jean for a good price. Im 5’2″ and i hate petite jeans, they always feel wrong on me. So that being said i stick to skinnys for the most part. I would love some help finding the right jean for me :)

    1. Be willing to get jeans hemmed – that makes all the difference in the world! I’m 5’5″ and I still get most of my jeans hemmed.

  91. My sister just asked me yesterday why my pants were always so saggy on my butt! I love your post but I don’t wear jeans with embroidery or other things on the pockets. Do you have any suggestions for a better fit for 5’3 115lbs and no pocket jazz going on?

  92. All the “alternatives” in this post are hideous, with ugly giant white stitching on the pockets and rhinestones??? no thank you, those are tacky as hell.

  93. Ii recently lost weight and can not for the life of me find the right pair of jeans- I am for real living with only one pair that fits me. What would you suggest for someone pretty short (5’1″) and petite? The pants I bought recently were a size 2 from target (I know, you’re probably ashamed, but I needed pants and I was desperate). Any help would be so appreciated. There are only so many days a week where you can wear leggings before someone judges you.

    1. I’m in the same boat! I keep dropping weight and now all my jeans hang on me. I think I need a 0-2 (not sure) and petite that are a little on the long side or regular that are on the short side?? I’m 5’2″ and 102 lbs with proportionately long legs.

      1. I wish you lived near me – I have a ton of tiny designer jeans sitting on my dining room table right now – and for $27.50! Although they would mostly need to be hemmed – that’s the thing with good jeans – they nearly always need hemming.

      2. Theres nothing wrong with TARGET! or Walmart girls—its the Jean fit that counts. I recently lost sooo much weight due to a thyroid problem and am currently in a zero. Its getting easier to find them now–but American stores cater to BIG overweight American women. They deserve nice jeans too! But dont forget us little petite women.

    2. The only petite jeans I like are Express jeans, or Emerson Edwards (which is only available through Vault). Otherwise, I usually recommend to people to be willing to get their jeans hemmed – I do!

  94. This post perfectly articulates what I have been trying to tell my skeptical friends/family members about why I am a brand snob when it comes to jeans. It totally matters! And sometimes spending the extra $ for a flattering brand is worth it! You look a million bucks instead of an unfortunate Wal-Mart shopper. I will be bookmarking this and sending a few people your way! xoxo

  95. You need to remember that there are so many different body types. Old Navy and Gap jeans fit me way better than any jeans at any store. Also, the designs on the butt of those jeans are HIDEOUS!

  96. OH. MY. GOOD GRAVINESS. This was an awesome post. I wish I had seen this before I bought my Old Navy jeans. Luckily I found out the hard way that they do make Mom jeans. I’ve decided to buy my jeans somewhere else. Thank you!

  97. I’m a teenager employed at old navy, and just so you know Old Navy”s TARGET shoppers are MOMS so it would make sense that they’d make mom jeans. This blog is also very biased in that you have a different shape/type than many other women, and some women actually look good in old navy jeans, of course the jeans aren’t ‘made for everyone… I personally find it hard to find jeans at old navy but when I do they compliment my shape. So yes some Old navy jeans are mom jeans but the new super skinny jeans they’ve been selling are actually much flattering than the sweetheart, Divas, and flirt… Good blog very interesting… Next time though try using different underwear as they also contributed to the unflattering jean look…

  98. I used to work for old navy. There were definitely more mom jean looks going out than not but there are a lot of women who look fine in them. Remember to shop around. I personally get my jeans from American eagle or rickis. They fit me better.

  99. Based on this article I purchased some LA Idol jeans, OMG!! my butt looked twice as large as it does in my Levi’s (or so my Husband said!!) and the stitching at the side emphasized my hips and made me look so wide!. Needless to say I sent them straight back.

  100. I loved your entry! Everything you said and showed is the exact for me! I am 5’5″, 140 lbs and I Have a body very similar to yours.. I have never boughten a pair of jeans from gap and old navy..they never seemed to flatter me and your pictures proved it! I always found luck with certain brands from the buckle, or candies at kohls.. and I was always so amazed what a good pair can do…thanks for this.. really makes me feel more confident going for something I know will look good.. its nice to see some skinny jeans that flattered! the few that I’ve ever tried one reminded me of those “misfit” ones lol, but the other ones looked great. Looking forward to shopping now!

  101. Thank you so much for this post, as well as your other denim-related posts! You just gave me a denim epiphany… I knew that I hadn’t liked my jeans for the last little while, but I hadn’t realized how bad they truly were until now! I thought my butt had gotten wider and saggier, but it’s not my butt… it’s the stupid Old Navy jeans! Thanks so much… I now realize what’s been wrong, and have an excuse to go shopping! =D

  102. I’ll be 48 this October and I don’t like all the bling and bright white stitching. I also like a darker, less casual looking denim. What would you suggest?

  103. How do I find NON Mom jeans that DO have a zipper that long? I have The World’s Longest Torso and am 5’10”. I mean, a 5″ zipper doesn’t clear my belly button and while I don’t need something that comes up THAT high, I prefer a higher rise jean so that there’s a chance it MIGHT meet the bottom of my shirt. Also, if jeans don’t come up over the top of my hip bone, there’s no way my body can hold them up gracefully. Any advice for how to find a good fitting jean for us incredibly long-waisted gals? Help.

  104. I love what you have done here. I have searched for jeans ever since this low rise stuff has come out, yet I hated the above the belly button of the 90’s. I wore men’s jeans in high school (the 90’s) since they let my gut hang over. Ok, it wasn’t a gut, but I didn’t like the high waist, can’t breath, suck me in ones. Now I’m 36, mom to 2 and don’t have $200 for one pair of jeans. I’m 5 foot 2 and about 115 lbs. I’m not curvy. My hips, thighs and waist are about the same. The bright pockets help my flat rump. Suggestions? How to you get the coupons, etc. for Express?

    1. Sign up for Express’ email list – they’ll barrage you with coupons! I would also try LA Idol if I were you – they give great butt curves, and they’re usually more around $50-60.

  105. What do you recommend for someone that is 5’5 115 pounds. I normally wear a size 2-4. Have a small waist and curvy hips, small butt. Thanks!!

  106. My problem has been with ratios on jeans: mega waist gap and teeny skinny thighs/knees/calves. There’s enough room at the waist to smuggle a football out of the store. I’m 5’4″ and around 130lb, but I have *thighs*. I bike and I play hockey and my legs are not those of skinny models and/or 12 year old boys that jeans seem to be designed for. (I also have thick knees. Thanks, genetics.) I really enjoyed this post and wanted to share with you guys the denim nirvana I stumbled into: Cowgirl Tuff Jeans. They were originally designed for women who ride in rodeos. Thighs! They don’t gap at the waist; they don’t vacuum-seal your thighs or create that extra butt roll below the pockets; they come in a real variety of sizes. No exaggerating, I have stopped looking at other brands altogether. I’ve bought them at RCC Western and online. LUV.

  107. I love this! What would you recommend a 118 lb, 5’3” 18 year old? I always have a hard time finding jeans that fit me properly.

  108. Hi! Forgive me if someone already asked this, but are there any APO/FPO Vault reps? My husband and I are stationed in Okinawa, Japan and we have a little less than a year left, so it will be awhile before I can try on and buy jeans in the states. I’d love to meet a Vault rep!!
    Thanks!

    1. I SO wish there were! I’ve talked to several people in Japan desperately needing the same thing, but Vault doesn’t have that available right now.

  109. Wow! A wealth of information! I sometimes think “is it just me, or does this not even LOOK like the butt from those LAST jeans??” I think women after a certain age (I’m 57) just don’t realize how much more we have to watch for! Thanks for the comradery!

  110. I use to work at Express and would have to agree the Express jeans (Stella) are the best fitting, however you must always try them on and check the zipper. I have bought a pair where the zipper was always falling down on it’s own. My husband had three pair of jeans where their was a defective zipper. Not only that, the length does shrink so you CAN Not dry them

  111. Hi! What jeans would you recommend for someone who is 5’8″, 130 pounds, with curvy hips, small butt, and thin legs? I can never find any jeans that fit in my hips and my legs since my hips are so much bigger than my legs are..I’d like jeans that are tight in the legs but can never seem to find any that work for me! Thanks!

  112. What would you recommend for a flat bottom, wide waist, and skinny legs? I have a problem finding jeans because if I get hem to fit around my waist the legs are baggy and it makes me look like I’m wearing a diaper. If I buy them to fit my long skinny legs then I can’t button them or theyfive me a muffin top. I think I’m built a bit like a chicken. I currently wear a 16 (not plus size because my thighs are not that big) and am 6′ tall. Is there any hope? Any stall? I’ve basically given up on finding jean that look good, I just wearing anything that fits. Advice?

  113. Why hasn’t anyone posred about us short round ladies with big round butts an round bellys? There is not a jean or regular pair of pant out there that fits us. I usually by a 20 to fit my belly but I would need 18 to fit my butt and legs. I look like droopy crotch no matter whatvI try. What brand do you suggest?

  114. I was wondering what your opinion is of Silver jeans and BKE jeans? I consider both brands “affordable”, and they make some super cute jeans! However, if they fall into a “mom” category of jeans, I have no problem retiring them!

  115. What about us plus size girls with thick waist and big rump and thighs? Jean shopping is miserable, Stretch jeans are evil. I look like I dropped a load after sitting in them for an hour : ( Help.

  116. Found this pin through pinterest and it totally mortified me! I am definitely a person to go to old navy to pick up jeans and after I read this, I looked at myself in the mirror and was horrified!! However, if you are still responding and have any input, where would you think I could find jeans that fit me (no butt, size 0/2, post baby). I have literally only bought old navy jeans. Do you have a favorite brand??

    1. You have all kinds of options available to you! But if you have no butt, you definitely need to stay away from Gap, Old Navy, and Express – they have the biggest pockets, and will flatten you completely and, when stretched out, give you saggy butt.

You need to look for good jeans with smaller pockets or flap pockets. If you want to stay in the same price range as Gap and Old Navy, American Eagle might be a good choice. If you want to try some nicer jeans, I would suggest any of the following:
      Hudson
      Red Engine
      Emerson Edwards
      Joe’s Jeans
      Zipper
      Antik

I wish you lived near me, because I have PILES and PILES of tiny designer jeans for $27.50 right now – it’s this crazy clearance that the company I consult for is doing (http://www.graspingforobjectivity.com/2013/02/27-50-jeans.html) – but if you’d like, I can try to locate someone near you.

  117. Rachel–you’ve done a great job setting Vault Denim apart from the rest! I have several pairs of Emerson Edwards, a pair of LAIdol, Grace in LA, and a few others sold by Vault. Not only are they not mom jeans, but they maintain their shape incredibly well. Thank you for highlighting everything that is wrong with the other brands out there! This is exactly why Vault Denim is sweeping the nation! Women want jeans that are reasonably priced, but give them their sexy back! Great job!

  118. American eagle jeans have a little bit of a problem with stretching too, but theyre the only place I’ve been able to find a size zero with a 36″ inseam :P

  119. What about for really short pp? Im only 4’10 and finding great fitting jeans is impossible! I wanna lift my butt and still have the slimming look especially for my little muffins top.. After my 2nd im struggling with the leftover baby pouch in the front as well. any help would be wonderful!

  120. Ok here’s my problem:
    45 yrs old
    5’5″
    140 lbs.
    jeans never fit in waist
    Smaller waist and wide hips
I do have a button though
    Any suggestions?

  121. For future posts, you should check out Lucky Brand Jeans. I’m curvy and swear by their Sophia cut jeans (boot, curvy, and straight leg). I used to love Gap but i had the same problem with them stretching out and getting saggy within 10 minutes of putting them on. My whole outlook on jeans changed though when I bought my first pair of luckies. Just thought i’d let you know:)

  122. Awesome! I wish you could go shopping with me and help me pick out pants. I hate it and I can never find any that look that great… And I’m not a large person so I can’t ever figure out what the problem is. But we don’t have an express here and I’ve never heard of the LA brand you’re talking about. Thanks for the great post!

  123. As a fellow blogger, I know that this post must have taken FOREVER to put together. But the side by sides of the same bum (and a fellow mother’s butt, no less) are SO great! It makes all the difference to understand the different cuts of the jeans!

I too am guilty of “mom jeans” – but I just can’t wear anything low-cut (short zipper) without my butt showing part way through the day (I have the most ridiculous flat butt, which is paired with a pretty standard middle age tummy.) Plus, I end up going too cheap I guess — Gap jeans are generally a less expensive option than the designer jeans. And like most things, you tend to get what you pay for.

      1. I am looking for antik and LA Idol jeans in the Seattle, wa area, do you know of a rep over here i could talk to about where to find them?

  124. I love this post!! I’ve been wearing old navy jeans for years because I am on the larger side and they seem to be the only place I can find jeans that fit. I would love to find someone from vault if its available in my area. Not a lot of shopping options where Iive. Help I need new jeans. I live in eugene, oregon, where should I go?

    1. Sure – I don’t usually recommend mail-ordering, but I can find you a rep near you if you want. Our jeans are currently on sale for $19.95-$27.50 – crazy good prices!

  125. I struggle with jeans all the time, how do I figure out what’s best? Are the sale reps really helpful? Also what is vault denim?

  126. I love your blog but the jeans you recommend are soooo expensive……almost $200 a pair!! What others do you recommend??

    1. Sorry I’m so late in replying – my email got the best of me!

Retail store brands that I recommend are Express and American Eagle.

The jeans I recommended are close to $200 at department stores, which is why I consult with (and recommend) Vault Denim. They buy up the overstocks of designer jeans and sell them at a discount ($48-92) and right now, are closing out a bunch of styles at $19.95-$27.50 (one of the reasons I’m behind on my email – this sale has kept me busy!)

I also really like LA Idol and Miss Chic, which are less expensive brands that are pretty much identical to Miss Me.

  127. Single greatest blog post I’ve ever read! Do you have an entry on jeans for apple shapes and/or jean brand suggestions?! I’m desperate!

  128. Boy do I need your help! I look forward to checking out all the resources you suggest. I need petite jeans, which nearly always look like mom jeans. Another problem for me in trying to find something fashionable is gapping at the waist.

  129. Thoughts on American Eagle? I feelike I’m too old for them (27) but they’re seriously the only ones that are flattering on me. I wear boyfriend & skinny. Trying on other jeans is just depressing. I agree though — ON & Gap are awful… on me, at least.

    1. Juuuuust realized you answered this! Oops! I love AE jeans — they do stretch out a tiny bit which I actually like. Not saggy, just more comfortable.

  130. While you are getting butt texts, I am getting boob texts. I am in a mission to make sure that women everywhere are wearing the correct, flattering bra. Moms need to spend a few extra minutes, look in the mirror and make sure that everything is I the right spot.

I’m taking this post shopping this week, perky boobs and not a mom butt are my mission.

  131. Hi you are so funny I love the sense of humor about jeans! This is really helpful I wish I lived near you so I could get a fitting, but thank you for putting this out there. It is really helpful. Good job!

  132. So I don’t usually post comments on these things, but I wanted you to know that this was awesome. Not only are you informative, but you’re also very funny! Small lama hahaha!

  133. I am so glad that somebody else has finally pointed this out! I had always wondered if it was just on me that the Old Navy jeans looked horribly awkward since it seems like they are supposed to be for a younger generation. Thank you!!

  134. I truly enjoyed the visual examples shown, but my bigges problems with finding designer or even quality jeans is that. I’m 6”1 and take any where from a 16 to a 21 depending on brand. I thought I had found jeans that looked good on me until I recently saw a photo of md taken from behind, and it wasn’t pretty. I have a pretty straight figure but I recently had a baby, so I’m contending with a little bit of a left over belly. I am a mom but I do not want mom jeans! Please help!

    1. Do you know what inseam you need? It IS really hard to find jeans in that long of an inseam. But I’ll let you know if I run across any!

  135. I’m interested to see your take on Levi’s. (The ones straight from their store, not the ones the offer in walmart and such). I wear size 16, I’ve been working my butt off to work off baby weight, however that’s all I wear currently, plus some sweat pants every now and then. But even pre baby Levi’s were the jean brand I swore by. I would rather spend money on those than any others. I had tried on the brands you mentioned and the cut just didn’t work for me.

    1. It totally depends on the individual. They look great on some people, and awful on others. If the other cuts didn’t work on you, there’s a good chance that the Levi’s DO work on you!

  136. I LOVE this post!! What jeggings and jeans would you recommend for a mom with a mommy tummy. I wear a size 6 and I have a huge problem with a muffin top. I also have a big butt. So most of my jeans I am constantly pulling up or I have a nasty muffin top.I need a big a higher rise for big butts lol! Thanks for your help!

    1. My favorite jeggings are Red Engine – I got them through Vault (http://www.graspingforobjectivity.com/vault-denim) so they were $20 instead of $168. They’re higher rise, and they sit well and don’t keep falling down! The rest of my skinny jeans are so much more low rise, and so they are uncomfortable and create muffin top. My Red Engine ones are black, and I’ll be featuring them on my blog on Monday, if you want to see for yourself!

  137. You are amazing!!! Thanks for this wake-up call. Things make so much more sense now. I always wondered why I loved some of my jeans so much and now I see. Those others were not so obviously ‘mom jeans’ so I missed it. You rock!

  138. I’m 5’6″ and about 150-155 lbs. I typically wear JCrew bootcut jeans.
Any recommendations for my body type?

    Thanks!
    Naomi
    Columbus, OH

    1. It’s pretty much impossible to give good advice without more information or photos, but J Crew does make good jeans, so you’re probably safe!

  139. I would love if you did a post on mid-rise. It’s the only style I can wear being high-wasted and a flat butt.. Anything else gives me severe muffin top. I like Hudson Baby Beth mid-rise the best.. I am willing to spend the $$ money to get awesome jeans and will wear them every day (you only need 1 or 2 pair realistically although who doesn’t love having more jeans?) And I agree about the bedazzeld butt on some of the jeans. I’m 41 and don’t feel they look age appropriate on me. They look great on younger women though. Awesome post, thank you!!

    1. Most of the jeans shown here are mid-rise – a couple are low-rise, but you’re right – they’re much harder to pull off. My current favorite mid-rise jean is Red Engine – they are fabulous, look amazing, so comfortable, and hold everything in very well.

  140. This is very interesting! I’ve honestly never thought about this. I’ve always felt like if I could get my big butt into a pair of jeans, I’ve accomplished my goal. Maybe you’ve been asked this question before and maybe this is way TMI but what do you do if you have a REALLY high butt crack?! haha. I’m only 25 but I always find myself wearing mom jeans because I have a big butt and a high crack and don’t want to be showing that to people all the time. I’m a good size 10 so I don’t feel like I’m big. Some of my girlfriends have suggested I try applebottoms. I just HATE jean shopping!

    1. You just need to find a brand that has more room in the butt, or a brand that goes up in the back – many brands are starting to have a higher rise in the back than they do in the front, which is helpful. I would recommend trying LA Idol or Red Engine.

    1. Without photos or more information about your body’s curves, I can’t really give much helpful advice. Feel free to send me more info, though!

  141. This was hilarious. And very very informative. I gave up on Gap and Old Navy years ago (for anything jeans or tops). I’m a strict Banana Republic a holic. I also love Black House White Market jeans in Dallas fit (I think, I finally got a hole and had to throw them out, mega sad face). Now that we finally live within 30 mins of Nordstrom again, I find great jeans there. I’m going to try the Express Rerock. My biggest issue is I have very long legs and a teeny waist (usually wear a zero. Which is no where near as fun as you might think. It means shopping in juniors…wah!)

  142. Question for you. As most women tend to have a pear shape and need smaller waist and larger thigh area. I have an extremely short torso and long legs. Many jeans are so tight in the waist so you get the dreaded muffin top spillage. I typically wear a size 4 and if you get low rise you get the muffin top and mid rise sits right under the bra line. I have tried almost every jean on the market! Suggestions?

    1. Hm. I’m not exactly sure, but I think you need to find a jean that has a stretchy waistband so that it won’t cut into your waist and create a muffintop. I would try LA Idol, William Rast, or Emerson Edwards, possibly. Express might work for you as well.

  143. I have twin 6 year old little boys (my whole world!) and I spoil them rotten. One day I decided to spoil myself so I went to Buckle and put a pair of Rock Revival jeans on layaway there (they have 3 month layaway and its awesome!) and I’ve had these jeans for over a year and even though they were very pricey they are the best thing I’ve ever bought for myself! These jeans don’t stretch out and make me look 3 sizes smaller every time I put them on! The color has stayed the same through every wash! I’m not a fan of Old Navy or Gap and after buying a pair of these (and getting some more Rocks and Miss Me jean for holidays) it’s hard to love any other kind! This article was great!!:)

  144. I’m a dude, and my brain hurts. At least twice, I looked at the pic and thought, “oh wow, showstopper.’ On both occasions, it was the wrong answer. To a guy, great jeans on a woman are just … well, you know them when you see them. P.S. My best jeans ever have come from GoodWill.

  145. I’m 5″ 120 pounds The jeans I like the best that dont stretch out while wearing them are LA Idol jeans & Angel Jeans I also have all my jeans hemmed as I am only 5″ Its enexpensive I spend around $6 a pair at the local dry cleaner.I actually prefer My LA Idol jeans over My Miss-Me’s My Miss-Me’s seem to stretch out on the butt within an hour of wearing them. I have ordered alot of My LA Idol jeans off Ebay they tend to be cheaper there .The last pair I bought off Ebay was $35 for a new pair .You just have to be willing to spend the time looking for them. Also Rue 21 sells a good knock off brand called Premier Jeans They are around 15 to 30 a pair and also fit great.I’m now 26 & have always worn Angel Jeans from JCPennys, Gordmans, & Ross until I decided to try a pair of LA Idols.I have never been able to wear Old Navy or Gap jeans as they didnt make them small enough for me every pair I ever tried swallowed me. And for the ladies getting upset about all They can afford is Gap or Old Navy I have always personally thought those Jeans were a little to expensive for Me as my Angel Jeans run 15 to 25 a pair & fit well & dont waer out even if you have had them on all day.

  146. OMG! I have just lost about 70 pounds and started wearing skinny jeans! I am always worried that my butt looks bad. I have 3 great kids, but I sure as hell don’t want to rock the mom jeans. You are so awesome for posting this! I just may have to get your number to send you butt texts lol. Thank you!

  147. Help! And thank you for your post. I am a little confused on somethings. I use to love NY NY jeans and then they stopped carrying the jeans I liked and the store went out of business in our area. IA. Then I liked some jeans I bought at JCP and then of course the did a whole overhaul and they dont carry them anymore. The St John Bay ones. I am a Mom and I do daycare. I like high waist jeans because i have given birth and I like the way a high waist holds my middle area in. A low waist makes me feel like my muffin top is hanging out all the time and I have to walk around sucking in my gut. I wear a size 8 and I am 5″4. The one pair of jeans I have right now that I feel really fit me good and hold me all in is a pair of Old Navy Sweetheart’s Longs sz 8. I would just love to find a good pair of jeans that would fit me and some Capri’s. I do notice that they dont make my back end look the best but they feel the best and that is all I can find around here. I would love any suggestions you could give me. I just noticed a friends of mine had a Vault party. I never had heard of them before. I have also never checked Express for jeans. I just figured they would be ones that would only carry the low waist jeans.. I would love to go back to the old jeans that had no spandex in them. Sorry it maybe is just me but I like the old jeans. Thanks for any help you can give this 44 old Mom. Loved finding your site.

    1. Higher waists are hard to find, but I’m definitely a fan of mid-rise. If you’re used to super high waists they may take a little time to get used to, but most people don’t go back after trying them. Express’ Stella Cut is a mid-rise, as well as many other brands.

The highest rise jean that I’ve found that looks really good on is Red Engine. They’re expensive unless you find them on sale, but they’re absolutely amazing, and stay where they’re supposed to stay.

  148. I got my first pair of Gap real straight jeans after I had my first and I came across this post looking for another pair. They’re mummy jeans because they’re comfier….. I for one can’t be doing with suffering in the name of fashion any more!!

  149. I will be honest while this is an awesome visual. what about jeans for those of us who cant afford a 100$ + pair of jeans. I know you mentioned the jeans party, but I looked into that and the jeans on there start high as well.

    1. I am a huge believer in shopping the clearance racks. I’ve never paid $100 for a pair of jeans! Also, Vault is clearancing out a ton of designer jeans right now, too, at $19.95 and $27.50. So deals can definitely be found anywhere, it’s just a matter of looking for them. And the quality of higher end jeans is definitely worth the search!

  150. Excellent article. Being able to talk about jeans and keeping the reader engaged whilst still having a page full of butts is a rare skill. I have included your article with proper citations on my site, as an example of excellent article writing.

  151. I loved this post! I wish I had found it sooner. I wish you did an article on the “in-between” sizes for those like me who are too plump for smaller sizes bit not big enough for plus sizes. I’m 5’7″ and have a 35″ waist and 47″ hips…finding jeans that I love are limited to Amethyst brand and a pair of Ariya jeans from pre-pregnancy. Any other jeanleaves the buttcrack dip (where your crack peeks out of the top) or horrendous tight high waists and baggy legs. Any suggestions will be considered.

  152. This has been so helpful! I struggle with finding non-mom jeans that fit my mom-ponch well. I need a happy medium between major muffin top and 1985 mom pants! Help!!!!

  153. I found this on Pinterest, and I have to say that I don’t agree with everything on this post. First of all, you’re right about some certain styles of Old Navy and Gap jeans looking like Mom jeans. But if you shop some of the other styles, you’ll find that they are NOT all like the ones you tried on and posted. I have some Gap jean that make my butt look great – that particular style is the Curvy Bootcut. The pockets are high and spaced properly, not low and wide like the other types you show. I also have some jeans from Old Navy that are the Diva cut, for curvy figures, and again, the pockets are high up and they make your bottom look good. Some of the jeans you tried on in this post are just ridiculous – there is no way at 30 years old, with a child, I’m going to a potluck dinner wearing bedazzled bling-bling on my butt. You honestly shouldn’t be wearing them either. You’re not 18 yrs. old and single!

My favorite jeans, that I can actually AFFORD are Levi’s 504 Slouch Straight or Slouch Flare (they make your butt look AMAZING), and Hippie Jeans brand from Buckle. They are stylish and young looking, but don’t make me look like I’m auditioning for American Idol when I go to the grocery store. Not to mention, they are HALF the price of some of the jeans you mentioned. Sorry, but 7 for All Mankind is way too overpriced, even though they are great (I have 1 pair that I bought cheap from eBay in my pre-baby days). Now, I don’t have $120 to spend on one pair. I guess if your husband makes that much money for you to spend on clothes, then you can buy them. Most of us DON’T have that kind of moola, and again, although we don’t want to wear Granny pants, we also DON’T want to look like we’re still trying to fit in with the popular girls in high school!

    1. “I guess if your husband makes that much money for you to spend on clothes, then you can buy them.” Are you (edited) kidding? Maybe she’s a capable, independent woman who makes enough money to spend it on whatever the hell she wants. Not every wife needs to be dependent on her husband’s salary.

      * Edited to remove profanity

  154. What would you recommend to me? I have to wear Maurices jeans just because they do not gap in the back. Also they have extra short (an inseam of 29 inches). I am 5’2″ and wear a 5/6 there.
