Watching the Olympics every day for two weeks brings up a plethora of questions, interesting conversations, stories about childhood, and issues to talk about, doesn’t it?

Here is one of mine and Chris’ deeper Olympic-birthed conversations, and we need an answer to the burning question that came from it!!

You know the song, right?

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world!
Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world!

Well, we were discussing different ethnicities, and got to talking about colors represented in the above song. Now, my Mommy always taught ME that:
Red = (American) Indians, and
Yellow = Chinese.

But Chris vehemently disagreed and said that he was taught that:
Red = Chinese, and
Yellow = Mexicans.

Now, we need to get this cleared up before Ali starts asking us what people are red and what people are yellow!! So, please, let us know what you were taught so that we can correctly teach our daughter racial generalizations just like all of us were!

Or is this song just “right out” with today’s political correctness?

  1. Chris’ G’ma which we all know knew everything about ethenticities taught me (Kitty) red is the American Indian, yellow is oriental, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, white any very light skinned person, and black are African American and people of other nations with “black” skin. Yes the song is not politiclly correct today but, the point is Jesus loves everyone on the earth. Sorry, Chris you messed up this time. Love ya anyway.

  2. Chris the red chinese were called such because they were communist, not the color of their skin. Yes, Mama discussed the in detail. k

  3. I was also taught that red is American Indians, and yellow was Asian (Chinese,Japanese, etc.)

    The Chinese are red because they are communist.

  4. I don’t remember if I was actually taught who the colors were supposed to represent..I think I just figured it out on my own. I think it’s just important to teach Ali that God made each of us different and that He loves us all the same! :)

    P.S. I “tagged” you…see my blog! :)

  5. Thanks, everyone! Obviously this was just a thinly veiled attempt to prove that I was right and he was wrong, and you all helped wonderfully!! 5-0 win for me!!! :D

  6. Oh yay!! That’s one of my Dad’s favorites! He read them to us as kids – with all of the voices and dialect and everything. Only problem – finding a copy to analyze. Oh, and while we’re at it, let’s find a copy of “Song of the South”! :D
