Last fall during the American Music Awards, I noticed a very scary trend: the Adult Onesie. Onesie AMAs copy
It was disturbing, it was edgy, and, as I feared, it was the first step on the way to a new and terribly horrifying trend.

The Onesie is now known as . . . . The Romper.

If you haven’t yet laid eyes on this new and somewhat nauseating trend, you’re very lucky. But I’m afraid it won’t be long before the rampantly spreading epidemic will be searing your eyes as well.

In the past, when you would search the internet for “Romper”, this is what you’d come up with:Baby Romper

But no longer is the world that cute of a place. Now, this is the meaning of romper:

Rose Romper

My sisters, this should not be so.

There is a REASON that we are all ashamed of 80’s fashion as the Dark Ages of modern fashion – ESPECIALLY the early 80’s.

First of all, the prints are horrifically stomach-turning:Fab Floral Romper

The dropped waistlines add at least 30 pounds of completely unnecessary spare tire:Plaid Smocked Jumpsuit

And the embroidery looks like something that should be on the bottom of our Great-Grandmother’s tablecloths.Fab Embroidered Romper
We DO NOT want to relive these days, ladies! We’ve come so far to regress now!

The denim ones are especially horrible, combining Mom Jeans, Grandma Jeans, and even the Grandma-Jean-Waistband-except-at-the-TOP-of-the-Romper:

Denim Embroidered Romper
And really, what is any denim onesie without an 80’s belt to show off that accentuatedly hugifying waistline??
Sleeveles Linen Romper

And, if you’re proud of the fact that you’re sporting the early-80’s look, you can get it screen printed right on your romper:

The only thing I want with the year I was born printed on it is my Baby’s First Christmas Hallmark Christmas Ornament.

Since this lovely piece of fashion has evolved from a baby garment, it does lend itself to some burning questions:

Are there still snaps in the crotch?

Is there still extra room in the back end to house a diaper?

I hope I never know.

At least, since I’m pregnant, I’m safe from the curse.

Oh wait…

Maternity Romper

Yes, they have the especially nightmare-inducing Summer OR Winter preggo-belly ready versions!

Maternity Catsuit

Please, ladies, don’t let Romper happen to you.

  1. I actually don't think they're *that bad*. Super skinny people can pull it off, but you won't catch me dead in one of those. I do have one for Tessa that I think is super cute, though. Different strokes, I suppose. :)

But all that is besides the point. What, oh what, is going on in the top right picture of your quite disturbing collage at the top. What is in her pants?!?!

  2. I think some of them are pretty cute, too! Not the denim though, definitely not the denim. Ugh. Or the maternity ones. What???

If I weren't pregnant and a little more brave, I might try on a couple with the option to buy. As it stands now, I'm not even gonna try them out for fear of what might look back at me in the mirror.

Final verdict? Right person with the right shoes=cute!

  3. You can mark my vote clearly on the side of "the romper must go". Some fashion trends were not great the first time around, and rompers fit that category.

  4. My big question is how you go to the bathroom??? I definitely won't be wearing one now or ever! I'll leave the onesies for my baby. :). Oh and my mom totally had a t-shirt with that same circle/sunset print back in the 80s! Makes me want to save all my clothes b/c they'll propbably be back in fashion when the girls are our age. :)

  5. I think most of those prints are horrible, especially the denim and 80's sun print…but I have to say i think the first one is cute. And I agree with Lindsay, you have to have the right body type to pull it off! Fat people in "rompers"=terrifying. :)

  6. I could never wear one out in public unless I completely dehydrated myself. How WOULD you get that thing undone without it falling in the toilet or dragging the floor. I won't be wearing one anytime soon BUT I have seen some really young really thin girls wearing them and looking oh so cute!

  7. I forgot about those onesies that one had to wear in order to wear the tightest pants possible, yet still have one's shirt appear tucked in. The snaps in the crotch were not comfy at all.

You know what I miss? Corderoy knickerbockers and kulats shorts…

  8. I have fond memories of wearing rompers (or, as my mother called them, sunsuits) when I was…oh…say…five or six years old. I liked the smocking and the ties on the shoulders.

But I have no desire to wear one NOW. EGADS.

  9. I think you're right. No need for adult rompers. And I've asked the same question: how do you they go to the bathroom or really how much trouble is it to go to the bathroom. Crazy.

  10. Oh. my goodness. I was SO going to talk about that today too!!! We had some bad romper vision at Chuck e. Cheese Friday night. My friend said her motto for the summer is "just say no to the romper."

  11. I still want to know if they have snaps in the crotch & if you have to take off all of your clothes in order to use the restroom!

  12. What makes me terrified is going to the bathroom in one! Do you have to get completely naked to go? Yikes…..especially if you're in a public restroom. No thanks!

  13. Hey, Rach!

Well, you obviously don't have a 21 year old that looks "unfairly" gorgeous in these rompers..mostly the ones from Forever 21, Target, Lucca (here in Norman and OKC), and Urban Outfitters. Seriously, I remember wearing these. :) At 53, I am not "stoked" to wear one; however.

She loves those little flowered ones and the striped ones..and on and on. Of course, she is 5'5 and 106..so..seriously..how can anyone look bad in that? :)

P.S. She eats like 4 times a day. Totally unfair! However, except for oreo balls and peanut M&M's..she doesn't like sweets.
But, I'm with you on all the celebs wearing this "trend" OUT!!
But, on teenagers and babies and lots of people..they are "legit."

And, Samantha Kate, got part of her name from our Kate the Great!
You made me laugh..I needed to since I have been up since 1:30 a.m.
    Love you!

  14. oh my gosh! I am dying laughing! Yes, I agree with you…Rompers are AWFUL! & I didn't even realize they made them in DENIM!! Yikes!
